914 at last

Post by Racecraft76 »

Well I finally got the car home. who knew a trip from Newport to Glasgow would take the best part of 18 hours (LMAO). I shall explain................

Flew down to Newport and me Simon (guy selling 914) took it for a test drive. A few niggles but agreed on a price. On the way out of Newport stopped to fill car up with petrol. Car wouldnt start, would turn over but not start. Suspected crap from bottom of tank or petrol sludge caught in injectors, Mr AA guy called, car started.

An hour or so later on M6 in bad traffic, just after ordering some parts from Rodger Bray, Car dies in outside lane. Traffic chaos. Finally managed to manouver car through traffic to lay by. Mr AA called again, Highway maintenance flatbed pick up to local services and then pick up by AA flatbed there. There were a further 5 flat bed pick ups as I moved North in some kind of bizarre recovery van relay race. Got home at about 2.40 am.

Jobs to do.

Bodywork:
its straight and not a blemish on it so only going to underseal it.

Mechanicals:
Clean out fuel system
Change pedal bushes
Front OS sqeaking under load (investigate)

Misc
replace hood catches in trunk
Replace window winders and rubber channels.
May recover seats, but ok for now, no holes or marks.
Dash was recovered, but airvents covered too so need to cut vent cover slot.
Replace rollers on trunk Hinge. How easy is it to do this. Not convinced its going to be with those torsion springs?

Probably lots of things I havent encountered yet, But pleased with purchase. May consider switch to carbs after all.

Finally a Fourteener  :headbang:

Great Car! Try to save the FI if at all possible. If you need any small items I can get thru security in a carry on, let me know. We have a short layover at Heathrow on Saturday, the 29th ETA 09:45.

Just putting a list together for work needed. Have also found out that these cars leak alot in the wet. Needs a few new seals, rubbers, trim modification, engine/FI work, Front suspension set/some components replaced and electrics looked at.

Car is going to be a labour of love as it looks better than it actually is. It is solid though.

Going to keep it original if I can. I dont want to have to bin the FI, but looking bad at the mo. Luckily a Great mechanic with loads of experience with bosch jetronic FI lives close by.

autohausdolby I chose the car cos of its colour so I can swap it with your 914-6 when its finished

I have been offered a 3.6 twin turbo engine (408bhp). In the haggling stages at the mo. There are alot of ifs buts and maybes. Not sure how much work would be involved in fitting it but my mate seems to think it should be easy enough.
