White 916 with flares BYW 693V
The above car is the reason I have (at last) a 914 (I know, but they are pretty much the same for my purposes) - it was specifically the first one I'd ever seen, in the pages of a magazine I can't remember the title of in around 1982 (I was prime petrol-head material, at 12 years old) - which is why I'm asking here.
I thought I had found the article, titled "the forgotten porsche" in a back-issue of classic and sportscar, but having bought the back issue, it's the right car, but the wrong magazine article - the one in my memory went into more depth about the changes made to the car (it's got a bigger engine 'n' stuff), and I'm convinced it was in glossy colour, where the c&sc is colour only on the front cover, than b&w newsprint inside.
Have you got the magazine? Do you remember it? Is the car itself still around?Help me out here - I want to complete the 'loop' by having the car (my 914, I meen) AND the article that started it for me.

Hi Nige,
I know, but mine was on a 'W' until recently, as that was the year it was imported, so I'm assuming a similar story.
My guess is that having imported the car (in whatever configuration is started life), the owner completed the rebuild / renovation and set about showing it off to as many mags as would have him - perhaps following the time-honoured c&sc tradition of publishing a feature article in the same issue as the car in question appears for sale - witness the lightweight e-type in the latest issue.
It not being on the register is less promising, though.

Carl... I think maybe I can make you happy.
I believe I may have the magazine you are looking for.
5 or 6 page spread, I seem to remember - painted white, the (UK) car was delivered with white leather interior too!
But... there's always the chance that it's the same Classic & Sportscar article that you already have...
I will check at home at the weekend and then scan it for you.

Hey swapped... you must've been still on the forum, and read my post before I saw that I should edit it - may well be the article you already have.
Fingers crossed for you, but it's a rare article about a rarer car, so I'll scan and post for the 916 fans whatever the outcome.

I'd love to tell you exactly how to go about it, but it was done by the previous owner.
He did say it was easy though - even easier for him, as he lived a short walk away from the appropriate department bulding and just walked in - for all I know, you can do the same at any post office, but i would expect to have to do it through swansea at some point (though he didn't live in swansea...).
My car is now on an 'L', which is still technically incorrect, as that makes it a 1972, which is it's model year, but not it's manufacturing date ('71).
Previous owner said he was told it was possible to get the correct year, but it needed documenting by Porsche as part of the applciation, and calling it 1972 was enough to get it tax exempt.
I would have thought it would be enough to show that the chassis number has a coded build year, but it's not my decision!
When you succeed in doing this, it could make an interesting article here.

If your 14 is on an 'S' plate then you should buy the POR914S plate for it!
Has been for sale for ages so you could make of offer and get it cheap (I'd start at £500!)

I don't want to put anyone off scanning and posting / emailing articles, but are there legal / copyright issues involved?
I want you to send me any and all article scans you have, prior to considering your legal position, but AFTER that, is a repository of scanned articles something that DDK could create, or is it too much a minefield?
While we're at it, I have found an entire set of factory workshop manuals (bless-ed be the Internet), but no sign of an owner's manual - anyone know the location of a scan of one?
