- thinking about it, I suppose it's no worse than some of the 'replica' kit cars (Ferrari Dino, GT40, etc) 'back in the day' that were based on a Beetle floorpan/mechanicals ...

It's an early Sammio Spyder body design built by Gary Janes (who now does the very successful Formosa bodies). It was never actually sold as, or set out to be, a Porsche 550 replica.
Here's what Gary says about it: "A Sammio Spyder built using the first version of bodies . Only a handful of these were made before I changed the body . Early grille and VW headlights , very basic small engined car but with wire wheels added and a bit of a fettle … "
