Goodwood cleans up its act…

The biggest problem is people who tell lies - pretending the car they're racing is the genuine article when it (not necessarily clearly) isn't... It does the scene's credibility no good at all. How long before some major sponsors pull out preferring not to become associated with what some might consider a tainted race event? Charlie Gordon-Lennox has done the right thing in my opinion. Now let's see what effect it has.

Reading this with interest as I love Goodwood and in two days time will be at the revival on Sunday… What was the issue With this chap called Charlie, please.

…..no..it was a genuine one…I misread …what I was interested to know is what sort of “cheating” is being identified…is it just way more powerful engines..?…of all the developed ETypes racing that I have seen up close for example…they just appear to be running Webber fuel injection for example….as per the original lightweights….but these days they are probably just built better and maybe have better and stronger gearboxes, which was their Achilles heel back in the day

More than anything, it's that many cars are over-developed in every area. Look at the engines and you'll most likely discover that the only original parts are the block and a few ancillaries. Gearboxes full of modern components, brakes with calipers and discs way bigger than in period, new monocoques with improvements made in known weak areas, suspension built around modern high-tech dampers, rose-joints etc, replacement body panels throughout...to the point where there is very little left of the original vehicle. Instead you have a modern-day race car built in the shape of an oldie, leading the pack while owners of genuine original cars are left trailing in their dust.

Gordon Shedden, racing driver, was interviewed on ITV’s daytime tv show yesterday morning (I saw it on YT) and he said the cars are way way faster today than they ever were in period…

It's the classic everyone's cheating, everyone knows, it but nobody wants to point the finger because they've bent the rules too and it's escalated to a point where it is becoming so obvious something needs to be done.

Got excluded from an XR3i challenge race once as we’d glued the limiter up to allow our driver to hold onto second for a fraction of a second between two bends… someone noticed our car sounded different and reported it. Was it wrong? Yes. Did it actually help lap time? No.

Trouble is it was obvious and easily checked, unlike 99% of stuff at Goodwood!

Is there a Rule Book?
In Motorsport UK meetings the rules are very clear, their 'Blue Book' says it all and with local venue/event/organizer rules the package is clear for all to see, use and comply...
Unless you fins a loop hole.

I was told today who started all this off last year at the hillclimb I'm competing at, and remember the huge performance difference of the car and the rest of the pack on TV coverage.

If the only rule book is 'Gentleman's rules', then there is no hope of getting back to period mods and period racing performances.

Those days are long gone, and you cannot police it or prove it one way or another without some (very) serious money on the table.

I doubt you can buy 'KONI' dampers made like they used to in 1966...etc. so how can you go back to that level.
Tyres are the same, engine internals, and so it goes on.

It’s really interesting having been at Goodwood revival this last weekend.
Watching the old Dick Protheroe E Type CUT 7 holding off the cobras in the RAC TT race was delight… At least for the first part of the race with Martin Brundell’s son at the helm…..As the owner took over for the second half, the car slowly slipped from 1st to something around ninth or 10th …….Perhaps Driver ability is relevant after all

The fall off of the E-types was also due to a drying track, they had the edge in the damp when the cobras couldn't get their power down, as the track dried they lost that advantage.
