Option B might be to just cut the key areas such as bulkheads out now and just get those dipped and start a rebuild from a fresh floor from the ground up with a few key bits of metal from the original car AKA Ferrymans Carrera.

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
There is one worse on here!
This will look better when all the surface tat is dissolved off, and surly a mass of panels will bring it back alive.
The dash is ok so the number is safe and the other chassis number, but the floor etc is all going to go.
This is essentially a Ferryman car.
first thing to buy/get for a long loan is a cellette jig and a good welder etc
Second is a very long list of panels floor up
Third, some time to get it straight.
Great project, and Barry levels of skill needed?
hope you will see this one through and document it for us all to enjoy.
You know we are with you!

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
Thanks guys for you input - as always highly valuable especially at the beginning of the project - the last thing I want to do is strip and build the car to find the chassis is bent/out of shape so good to hear others thoughts. I spoke to my mate who painted my '65 race car and he suggested welding in bars (although he hasn't actually seen the car)- and while I see the merit in doing this I know that in some places (door posts) there is nothing to weld to. My fabricator seems to think the chassis, while very rusty, won't go out of shape because the tub sections (floor/rear seat/ parcel shelf/ roof/ dash/bulkhead area all intact and quite solid? However, for safety sake will probably weld across the floor above the tunnel to the sill areas to preserve those dimensions, possibly additional bars across door apertures and maybe one or two bars connecting those that have been welded in.
My painter mate (65 car) said his car-o-liner jig would be useless as I have no sills - see his point. I've seen DEEMAN using a Celette and that looks the ticket but trying to get one (esp in Northern Ireland)is another matter. So another option, armed with the factory manuals and all the relevant drawings I think we'll make a jig to pick up on all front control arm points, front struts as well as rear torsion bar, rear strut and rear engine mount points. I've seen this done on the early911registry and while a considerable amount of work is much less work that having to rebuild a car that's out of shape. Any one on DDK built a jig or any other ideas?
Yes planning on two years to get the car built - but equally could be two years just to get the chassis work done - not going to rush it. While financially I'm not a bottomless pit I do intend to use as many new body panels as possible - certainly all the new exterior panels will be new - but really the inners are poor and the cost of new ones is staggeringly expensive -DONOR car anyone??? My fabricator is very good and you'll be able to comment on his work as we progress - please keep us right!
Keep you all posted - thanks again for the support.

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
Have a read of Ferrymans's Carrera thread. This car was built from pretty much nothing on a Cellette.
My suggestion is to make your jig first (to factory dimensions) that picks up on front and rear suspension / engine mounting points, bolt the shell to it, add some tubes inside/across doors if possible then dip the whole thing!
If your car doesn't currently fit to factory dimensions I'm sure two strong men could pull at each end at make it fit!

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
I wouldn't bother with any bracing of the shell, any dimensions on it will be suspect anyway, all you would be doing is making sure it comes back in one piece rather than 10.
You must get hold of a Cellete or Car Bench jig to assemble this car on, but it will need all the window and door jigs as well, which are Porsche parts.
You need to read Ferry Man's restoration thread too, so that you know what work will be involved in your restoration, the only original panels in his car were the front and rear bulkheads and the top of the tunnel. All the outer panels, especially the inner wings and floor had to be modified to backdate them, to 74 style in his case, yours will require even more changes. For instance the earliest floor that you will find from Porsche is from a late IB car.
I was offered a complete new front end for a SWB a year or so ago, I can see if it still available if you like.

Yes Nick - A new front end would be rather useful to say the least - I do know of a possible donor 912 but concerned over the quality of the metalwork. I also take on board all you say about the need for a Cellete or similar and the window door jigs. Ideally I'd like to be able to hire (or better still borrow) but realise that that's not going to be an easy solution when based in Belfast.Nick Moss wrote:I wouldn't bother with any bracing of the shell, any dimensions on it will be suspect anyway, all you would be doing is making sure it comes back in one piece rather than 10.

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
I'd pursue the celette option - surely worth buying second hand as you should then be able to sell it on at the end of the project. If you're going to spend a load of time and money on it it's got to be important to get everything in the right place first - the last thing you want is to end up with an expensive car that's out of shape.
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

Yep - been thinking second hand - possibly selling later. Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
Nick - would the Porsche part have the same inner wings, tank support, front panel etc? The RHD pat of may car isn't too bad (well not as terrible as the rest of the car) I assume that the Porsche front end is pricey?Nick Moss wrote:Porsche stock the front end, but LHD.

Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
The part is 901 501 005 21, it's £5800 on my PET (which isn't quite up to date) so worth a call to the locall dealer. The smugglers box, steering and dial positions will all be different.redrobin911 wrote:Nick - would the Porsche part have the same inner wings, tank support, front panel etc? Re: 1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration
It's expensive considering it's LHD and the amount of work required to make it work with the RHD bulkhead. The answer really would be to find a RHD 912 donor car in decent condition but the chance of find one is remote to say the least. I'll just continue to keep an eye out for a suitable donor car and see if any other NOS parts turn up on ebay etc.Nick Moss wrote:The part is 901 501 005 21, it's £5800 on my PET (which isn't quite up to date) so worth a call to the locall dealer. As discussed in the 912 section maybe only 50 RHD 912s on the road so "remote" is probably very correct.redrobin911 wrote:It's expensive considering it's LHD and the amount of work required to make it work with the RHD bulkhead. Robin,
I was searching thru Pelican (as you do) and found this thread which may be of some use to you. It gives many dimensions etc and shows a home brewed Jig
Hope it helps

All dressed up and no place to go.......
Well actually all wrapped up ready for stripping and looking rather odd wrapped in black cling film. The shell, with many of the other pats left yesterday evening bound for Envirostrip. the shell should be back home in a few weeks - fingers crossed that most of it comes back
. On another note I've located an early 912 shell (see one of my other posts) and also bought a car bench jig, if any one can help with pointing me in the right direction for towers and plates for the jig I would be most grateful.
