1966 RHD Porsche 911 (UK Car) Restoration

Post by redrobin911 »

So it starts with me collecting the car today - a rare UK RHD car that been left to rust here in Ireland for the last few decades. Needless to say the bodywork is going to be a challenge but not impossible. Good to see lots of the hard-to-find interior still with the car.

Believed to be one of only 4 RHD cars imported in to the UK in 66 (happy to be proved different if other know?) Car details as I know so far detailed below and looking for more info from DDK'ers if poss. The engine is missing but otherwise the car is pretty complete - I am obviously looking for the original engine so if any one know where it is I would appreciate the heads up. (engine number below)

I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do with the car, I was going to restore then sell it but now will probably keep it and restore it as close to original specification as possible.

More pics and info to follow over the next few days

it was sold by Black & White garage Worcester (now closed)

Thanks for encouraging words - I'll need plenty more as we progress. I'm going to take a little time deciding how to approach the resto - considering envirostrip or similar to get rid of rust but need to find out more from the learned one on this forum - also doesn't help that I'm NI so getting back and forward to the UK adds £££'s - then there's the not so small matter of getting all the metalwork/new fabrication.

Door post below is one of the worst I've seen - scared to get go of the door as would most likely fall off!

Wow, another classic find! Good on you Robin for aquiring it and looking to restore it.
A '66S - not that many around especially in RHD!
As you have previous experiences with early Porsche, I will watch your thread with great interest.

'It can be done'

Best wishes

Ian

Major respect for taking it on. I simply do not envy your task. You must have 'Grande Cajones'.

Not to add to your headache but those don't look like 66 seats, steering wheel and rear grille to me.

Take a deep breath and dive in........ Major respect (as I have for DEEMAN and his rebuild, he will be your friend on this resto).

Regards
Mike

HI Mike

Rear grille fits the ducktail - and not original, yep wheel looks 70's and I wasn't sure about the seats but with all that I have that's not right can be sold to pay for the right parts. I've previously contacted DEEMAN when I was in the process of buying the car and yes his help will be required.

The car is very very rusty - with some shock botched repairs over the years - all will be revealed when we start to strip the car. I'm expecting this will be a long slog but gotta be worth it at the end to have something as rare as this??

For sure on both counts.

What was the original colour?
Edit: I see it above, polo red.

HI - is there anything anyone can add to info on the Kardex other than what's obvious? It would be great to find the history of the car and more importantly try to locate the original engine.

Loudspeaker fitted at the factory so it probably had a radio.

You could contact the first owner or at least look up the address but the c/o doesn't look too hopeful.

Your key code numbers are there if you don't have a set of keys but all the original locks are still there.

Three items replaced by AFN under warranty with the dates shown. Need to check the parts manual numbers to check what they were). £27, £25.60 and I can't read the other.

early 911 registry is a good place to start but perhaps too US centric for you? Next try the register at 911 Porsche UK Club ? I don't know if anybody knows there name but you have to join to use their forum (which I don't remember there being any activity on) so maybe better getting a phone number an calling directly. I think that Club Porsche UK can get quite excited about RHD cars!

"Club Porsche UK", I think you probably mean Porsche Club GB. The register secretary is Ian McLeod, who is a regular here.

You will need SWB front wings, indicator housings and horn grills, probably 4 screw, and of course steel rims. I can help with a 420 mm plastic wheel and horn push, which would have been original fitment.
