Just a quick inntroduction to the latest member of our design team.

1/5th Scale half model (using Al's idea of a mirror to do half the work and ensure perfect symmetry), weighing in around six kilos, and (in theory) bang-on scale. Not a detail model by any means, but every dimension is accurate, including the wheels.

The areas of the car that we are looking to re-design are obviously left off, and the idea is that Steve and Al will work through various possibilities in foam / clay / filler as needs be. All being well, we'll end up with the thing as a finished half-model, from which I can work from, and indeed derive dimensions to work back onto the full-sized version.

If I get time, I'll post up how I went about it all, suffice to say there's more to it than meets the eye.

And just to prove that it does fit:

95 hours alll in, including making the wheels. Cost has already been wiped away by a discovery on the front end that could have left things looking odd had we built the car as mapped out at present.

Oh yes, the red is a random pot I had left over (possibily from the Cappuccino), but gives a not-to-harsh finish, whilst being dark and mid-tone enough to give some nice refections. In fact, already the model has highlighted a couple of areas to the rear outside of the front wing that need a slight tweak just to get the light-lines to run a bit more naturally.

Overall, I can see that having a solid reference piece to which we can all look to, and apply ideas to, in a very efficient way has got to be a major leap forward. I should point out that Al suggested this months (years?) ago, but we went no further at the time. Then I had some input from another source that set things in motion and that was that. It was started about nine weeks ago, and nothing mechanised or electronic was involved: we've not simply had the car scanned, and some 3D printing or machining (which probably would have been the sensible option really, but we've always taken the hardest route so far, so why stop now :P ).

That's super, especially the last picture. The speed at which you're working is impressive, camera just shows a blur ;)

Safe to say, I'm Impressed! absolutely top job Barry. consider my cap fully doffed.

Steve is currently having a play about with ideas, after which the model will wing it's way to me up here and I will have the unenviable task of matching Barry's modeling skills to build several rear end options. It's actually (MUCH) easier for me, as it is free form styling work, as oposed to Barry having to measure and model accurately.

Oh, and try to colour match an unknown shade of red......... :0)

It's two pack, so the best thing is to do whatever you can up there, and then I can always add a coat or two down here when the time comes.

Absolutely can't wait to see what ideas come out in the next few weeks / months, and genuinely have no idea what Al or Steve have in mind, although I do know that Steve has some pretty wide-ranging experiments to work through. On the evening Steve picked the model up, almost straight away he tried a change on the rear track that instantly transformed the whole look of the thing. Something I hadn't thought of playing with.

Overall, I think the model is going to inject a new dose of drive and direction to the project, and hopefully the significant investment in my time and Steve's £££'s will pay off (over and above the discoveries made with it's aid to date).

Thanks for the comments Al, btw, really looking forward to meeting up and having a model-handover 8) .

Oh yes, anyone seen Steve recently? Last I heard he was heading into the workshop to work on the model, and that was nearly a week ago ....

Oh yes, Al, let me know what reference marks you want on the model, and I'll make sure they're added in before we hand it across :) .

Not sure what reference marks I'd need - I'll just go all artistically freeform!

Not sure where Steve has gone, but I did ask him if he was going to free his inner Etorre Bugatti.

I did spend quite a while in the pits at Goodwood again, getting a few ideas in my mind.

One thing I'm conscious to avoid is loosing the delicacy between a small engined sportscar and the purposefull stance I know Steve is after. It'd be all to easy to make it look very powerfull, but not have the 'go' to match the 'show'. There is a happy balance I'll have to find.

Time will tell.........

Good stuff, I can always reverse any measurements back to full size from the measuring rig if needs be.

As you say, that balance between agression and delicacy is the key, whilst finding some proportions that help with the roof. It'll be an interesting process!

Barry,

Very nice model making and Al's idea of the mirror I would never have thought of. Having the model in that stage gives your eyes the chance to really see how it should flow. I can see where the hours went making that. The wheels I could have turned, but the body even with all the dimensions which have to be correct, has me foxed. For sure I have several ideas but, its not small and making a mold surely would not be viable cost wise? How was that made? Is it some form of plastic, or is it a question you would rather not answer? If you made a small buck and then formed each section in aluminium thats a massive job surely?

Anyway well done indeed, I am impressed its super.

Barry,

Looked again at the photo's is that body formed from a block of solid wood. and do you have access to a 5 axis CNC mill? You have to tell me or give me a hint! Please :? :?

I think I know. Edam is very easy to form and has a waxy red coating.

 Damn, my cunning secret is out. When Steve leaves it, it has to be surrounded by mousetraps.

Very, very close! It is wood (well, MDF), and it is solid, but isn't formed from a solid block of wood / MDF.

No CNC milling though. Clue: 1800 measurements from full sized, divide all by five, apply 1800 measurements to model. 189 measurements for the wheels, divided by five and applied via manual lathe to wheel blanks ....

So, how to measure car, how to transfer onto a model?

Jonny knows, so can't say (or if he does, he'll end up with the world's biggest doorgaps on his 911 next month  ).

I'd suggest it looks fairly obvious from your photo, as you can't miss the reference frame in the background. ;)
