Wheel Bolts

Post by c7 »

Hi all - I'm just visiting from VolksZone for a quick tech question if that's ok :)

could anyone please confirm the wheel bolt thread size on a contemporary Porsche? - i believe it's M14x1.5 (radius faced)

thanks
Christian

ok, me again!

I was told that current Porsches use wheelnuts as oppsed to wheelbolts (ie the stud is part of the hub, rather than a hub with five holes)
I ordered a set of wheelnuts (direct from Porsche UK) but received bolts :(
Was I misinformed? or is it only certain models of Porsche??

please help!!

thanks

The 911's I have owned have all had the studs as part of the hub.

c7 - it's the other way round. Modern Porsches use wheelbolts whereas earlier models (certainly up to '89) used wheelnuts.

The part number for the alloy wheelnuts to be used with Fuchs wheels is:

999 182 003 36

Andy

You had me worried there so I've just been into the garage and taken a nut off my Turbo - they were still nuts on the 964 series too.

to clarify then:
Pre '89 Porsches use wheelnuts in M14x1.5? correct?

while I'm here - can anybody recommend any secure locking wheel nuts? I had a bit of a surprise with the last set!

cheers

(*edit - oops! i'm confusing myself aswell as everyone else now! - i meant 'nuts!)

Confused by what you mean?

Early cars (and I suspect all air cooled right up to a change for the 996's) need wheelnuts to fit on to the studs that are part of the hub assembly.

As for locking nuts, I have the Porsche ones on my later car and as these need an 'overfit' adaptor to unlock them, are likely far more secure than those you can stick a spline type tool in to remove - hence why you often see Ford's / VW Golfs on bricks in a morning!

sorry - i've edited my post now - i meant wheelnuts

I've seen some late (Porsche branded) locking nuts - the head just being a splined shaft (like you'd see on a steering colomn) i guess there must be different sorts...

I think the easiest solution (being the weekend!) is to drive down to Porsche in the morning - at least I should know what to ask for now! lol

Thanks again for the help and info

Sorry - posted an ebay link but when I rechecked it they were wheelnut 'covers'.
