I rebuilt the Shift coupler today using Superpro bushings, and couldn't resist seeing what it was like. I had a feeling that the shift coupler on my Red 912 wasn't in the best shape, and I wasn't diappointed...

Inner part of the bushing was missing...
Image

Alot of play, front to back, side to side...
Image

Fitting the rebuilt Shift coupler into the Red car was straight forward...
Image

I had measured how far the original Shift coupler was inside the socket, though had forgotten about the spline rotation....needless to say I reversed out of the garage ok, however going into first I still went backwards  I couldn't find 2nd and 4th felt like 1st

Afew adjustments later, though I think it was more luck than skill, and it was sorted. The difference in shifting is amazing, much more solid and direct. Great upgrade, just make sure to measure and mark its current position before removing

Petrol tank cleaning...

This is how it looked earlier in the year, before welding the filler tube and neck in place. Cutting off the original filler neck gives a good view of what is going on inside, RUSTY...

Before the cleaning process starts, some prep work is required. Very important to seal off the tank, to stop nasty chemicals from spilling out...

Fuel sender...rubber and acrylic cap
Image

Filler neck...rubber and formed (whacked with a hammer) metal
Image

Image

Breather pipe and outlet...PVC pipe melted to form a seal
Image

Image

Drainage outlet...PVC pipe and removable brake line clamp (to allow controlled drainage)
Image

Plug...don't have a 22mm socket? M14 nut and bolt combo

This is when it gets interesting. Taking advice from a Mechanical engineering student, its a long story :)
I decided to use some domestic drain cleaner first to clean out the tank (3 bottles used)...

Image

Alot of shaking and tank spinning later the contents can be disposed of and then flushed out...
pretty clean...
Image

Next step...5 litres of Phosphoric acid  ...
Image

More shaking and tank spinning
Image

Image

Flushed again...and repeat the shaking and spinning process with stronger 85% Phosphoric acid

Though the results are great...
Image

Image

Flushed again and add 'Spiritus' alcohol cleaner to dry it out...
Image

make sure its completely dry, then use POR 15 tank sealer. Though this needs to be done next week, as I am off to New York tomorrow.

That's interesting - so that's the chemists version of the kit that POR-15 do - good to know as I'd think it's cheaper to be buying chemicals than a branded 'kit'

Looks a good finish

Brilliant as ever Chris.
I remember using nothing more hi-tec than a hand full of nuts and bolts and a gallon of paraffin the last time I cleaned a tank out ( '73 Lambretta I think )
As Nige says , you might want to give your hands a good scrub and change your jeans before you get on that flight to New York

I think the cost is about the same, maybe slightly cheaper. The main difference is that the chemist version uses bigger volumes compared to the kits. The chemist version uses a bucket full of the drain cleaner, and 5 litres of Phosphoric acid...compared to 1 litre of the equivilents in the kits. I guess the theory is that using bigger volumes gives a more through clean. The only thing I know, is that a petrol tank with a bucket full of drain cleaner inside is bloody heavy to slosh around :)

No chance of the nuts and bolts method here in Germany on Sunday :) I once put the lawn mower on the lawn so I could put something in the shed.....the neighbour had a panic attack as they thought I was going to cut the grass on a Sunday.

If you don't hear from me again, it means I didn't make it across the U.S border

On Saturday, between doing all the other jobs that make noise and going to the supermarket (before 3pm where I live)...Did I mention that EVERYTHING is shut on Sunday?.....and don't even think about trying to wash your car on Sunday!
