Hendrik has just kindly confirmed that he's sending down his '1001 Watches' book, which I'm sure will lead to much head-swimming and slippery slope danger.

I must try to remember the main objective I've got in mind (much discussed this last weekend) for the next few years though, and keep the watch element a bit sensible.

Still, half the fun (at least) is in the research and the general looking around ....
Start shopping at Tesco, they can buy you a nice watch

But a good thing Jason.
If Barry (like me) only wants one watch then it's wise to get it right first time!
Book should be with you today or tomorrow Barry.

Derek Bell Heuer Monaco

Post by Little Rascal 356 »

Just heard Derek Bell talking about an engraved Heuer Monaco given to him by Steve McQueen after the filming of LeMans. Engraving said "To Derek, best regards Steve".

Derek lost the watch some years ago.

Is it hidden away in someone's collection?????

If only! Given how much one of the Monaco's worn in the film fetched!

Go on - how much?

Am still on the hunt by the way. Looking for a McQueen spec pref with box. I know you have an exeptional version but t'was a wee bit above my humble budget.

Yes, I noticed that.

As for my mission, there has been a development or two.

I very much like the Damasko's, but now I've got my £35 CWC from e-Bay, I'm a little concerned that a lovely new D36 isn't going to look quite different enough for the extra £685  . So very, very close, but no banana today. Perhaps save a Damasko for another day.

I've got to be honest, and say that I feel that I'm rebelling against the relentless march of Swatch controlled fare out there. I like chronographs, and I enjoy my two Seiko's (a 6138 and a 6139), but Bullhead aside, feel I've 'done those', and don't feel the need to get every colour combo or whatever.

Anyway, I'm now wondering about something a bit more vintage. With this in mind, I've just called a horologist friend of mine who has a number of 'interesting' movements (some with, some without dials) and watches from all periods. We talked about various options and qualities, all around the base brief of 'a decent quality chronograph'. Long and short of it is that he's going to have a cast around his stock, and that of his many horo. friends. He did say that he had a 1950's Breitling chronograph though, with dial, no case. I like the sound of that as a starter, depending on what else he comes up with.

Frankly I'm not looking for investment potential, and I'd rather have something that is a quality piece albeit over half a century old, the rebuild of which being commisioned by me on my fortieth (next week), and to be done by a good friend. Also, much as I sort of like the idea of an expensive (for me) watch, I just know that if it's too much, it simply won't get used. I'd probably regret it, and wish I'd taken another £1000 or two off the mortgage  . This route could provide a genuinely interesting alternative that won't break through my comfort zone.

We'll see what happens, and I'll report back after I've visited Clive's.

Yep, you are. :)

Big thanks to Jason for his help recently, he was very generous with guidance & advice. He urged caution when appropriate and then pushed me when the right watch came along. The man knows his way around vintage Rolex and I'm very grateful to him for allowing me to tap into his knowledge base.

Some blame lies with Sladey too though.
I'd seen his vintage Rolex and it got me hankering for one.
Once I started looking I got a little carried away and before I knew it I'd acquired a rather nice 'Double Red' Sea Dweller.
It's a 1665 model dating from '75. It retains the original dial and hands with a nicely aged creamy yellowing of the tritium. The bezel is a slightly faded silvery/grey and looks lovely. 8) 8)

Oh I don't know...just picked up a watch specifically for you this week...its cheaper than a cheap thing but I think it might just make it 2 watches you have...

Sorry Paul

Glad you like it though. The dial and and hands are an absolute peach on that watch which is quite rare in itself, enjoy wearing it.

My watch enthusiasm has wained recently...probably because i've not been looking specifically for me for anything....but the postie arrived half an hour ago from France and I have a big box sitting in front of me.

Heart is racing a bit....long time since I got this excited about a watch...long long time...

pics to follow for you fellow saddos...
