As for my mission, there has been a development or two.
I very much like the Damasko's, but now I've got my £35 CWC from e-Bay, I'm a little concerned that a lovely new D36 isn't going to look quite different enough for the extra £685
. So very, very close, but no banana today. Perhaps save a Damasko for another day.
I've got to be honest, and say that I feel that I'm rebelling against the relentless march of Swatch controlled fare out there. I like chronographs, and I enjoy my two Seiko's (a 6138 and a 6139), but Bullhead aside, feel I've 'done those', and don't feel the need to get every colour combo or whatever.
Anyway, I'm now wondering about something a bit more vintage. With this in mind, I've just called a horologist friend of mine who has a number of 'interesting' movements (some with, some without dials) and watches from all periods. We talked about various options and qualities, all around the base brief of 'a decent quality chronograph'. Long and short of it is that he's going to have a cast around his stock, and that of his many horo. friends. He did say that he had a 1950's Breitling chronograph though, with dial, no case. I like the sound of that as a starter, depending on what else he comes up with.
Frankly I'm not looking for investment potential, and I'd rather have something that is a quality piece albeit over half a century old, the rebuild of which being commisioned by me on my fortieth (next week), and to be done by a good friend. Also, much as I sort of like the idea of an expensive (for me) watch, I just know that if it's too much, it simply won't get used. I'd probably regret it, and wish I'd taken another £1000 or two off the mortgage
. This route could provide a genuinely interesting alternative that won't break through my comfort zone.
We'll see what happens, and I'll report back after I've visited Clive's.
