If the speed limit was higher - ooh lets say 70 mph - you would get people travelling at "just over the limit" at 80 mph leaving even less time to slow down, take evasive action.

Clearly everyone on this board is a safe and observant driver who can drive safely in excess of the speed limit...oh no I am wrong because some of you HAVE been caught speeding (including myself) and therefore not observant enough...
my last post on this subject

I agree the law is the law ( although my lawyer wife would probabally point out the law is not black or white)

but 70mph limit question .... in the right circumstances 80 mph is not 'unsafe' . . Inappropriate speed is an issue Someone flying down a residential street @ 40 mph deserves punishment. In fact , sometime I feel the 30mph speed limits on some streets is too high. I think some us have an issue on the judgement of certain speed limits & the resulting 'policing' of these limits with the primary aim of cash income.

Without tempting fate , I have had a clean licence since the day I passed my test ( 17 years ago)

Having typed this I would suggest that you do not drive for the next month - you just know there will be a notice of impending prosecution landing on your doormat otherwise!

The boys in blue in Devon & Cornwall have always loved cameras, there's been a Gatso at the foot of Haldon Hill (Exeter) for 20 years or so.
Having on occasion over the last 15 years had 11 points for 18 months or so and 9 points for nearly two years in that time, I feel for you Vicki.
But I wonder if the tide is turning...
About a month before Christmas, I was 'snapped' doing 36 or so in 30 limit, which I drive through possibly 3-4 times a week. It's just 2 miles from home, so I know it so well, but this a** in an Astra was up me chuff, etc etc.. Guv!!
Waited the usual 2 weeks and the envelope plopped on the mat. Bugger.
Did the usual head-in-the-sand man thing for two weeks and didn't open it. Wish I hadn't.....
" You are registered as the owner of xxx yyy z and we'd just like to remind you that 36-ish in a 30 ain't right, you've been a very naughty boy, but please learn from this and moderate your speed."
Not the exact words used, you'll understand, but you can unbderstand the gist. I just stood there, chin on floor for, ooohhh, must have been 3 days.
Cos I do have collection. even got 2 points on a non-existant Irish License for doing 63 in a 60 limit outside Limerick. On the only dual carriageway in Western Ireland!!
Anyway, I have framed the thing and it now proudly hangs on the wall of the Home Office. Then it was Christmas.

bladesman,

your argument runs true if you take a black and white view on life, but things are very rarely back and white, if ever.

I managed to get three points a few years back for running a red light - I stopped halfway through the junction, at a second red light ( because I physically missed the first, due to the junction being confusing )

I rang up plod, who said that if I wanted to appeal then I could get a/more points or b/ a bigger fine, and that by the letter of the law I had broken it.

Technically they/you are/were correct - I ended up paying the fine. whilst I felt robbed, I thought about the countless times that I had roared up the motor way thrashing the living daylights out of my M3 to the point where the limiter came into play. how I'd driven dangerously on many occasions and got away with it, how I'd drunk driven more times that I could remember but again gotten away with it whilst driving without a valid licence MOT and insurance, whilst denting cars in carparks and driving away without leaving a note so some one else can pick up the bill... oh what an easy life I lead.

obviously the above isnt actually me, its a combination of the people that frustrate me in my daily driving life, but the purpose of this post is for me to convey to you the shades of grey that life throws at you, and that many many people 'get away with murder' where as the general law abiding folk get hammered and hampered by what is essentially a tax. - don't forget, most people that get done for speeding by cameras dont even know it, so their speed doesnt reduce, so they are just as likely to have an accident post picture as pre picture.

and to answer your other comments - I recently had a very nice mountain bike stolen - police action - none.

both wing mirrors smashed ( in front of CCTV ) - police action - None

Trespasser on my property ( suspect he was there to steal someting ) - police action - none.

Wife got physically and verbally harassed at work and at home - by ex - police action - letter sent to ex... nice.

and the other comment - 'say that to your child that got run over' at 34 miles an hour...

I got run over as a child, by a mini of all things - yellow - it was going 40 miles an hour - it was all my fault - I stepped in front of it. I dont blame the driver who was going 10 miles over the limit - I blame me for being a stupid idiot for not looking where I was going. - smashed me up pretty badly for a while and gave the driver the shock of her life. - but again my fault.

now back to Vicky. - sorry that you got points, very unfair in my opinion
- next time make them count. :)

Just read that a temporary camera put in for roadworks on the A316 - the continuation of the M3 into london down twickenham way, has raised a million quid in 4 months. I think that its a new personal best for cash-cows?

Isn't this the 30mph limit on a raised dual cariageway? Imagine how stupidly unnecessary that is at 8pm in the evening, and its not surprising they're catching hundreds of 'criminals'.

Motorist - I was only doing 6 mph over the limit I wasn't going that fast what does it matter?

Scrote - I only used my fists to beat this bloke up at least I didn't stab him what does it matter?

And the difference is??
One has a victim.

I had to respond, as I can't believe how poor this comparison is (no offence intended).

I think it worked out at 150 per day at 60 quid a pop!
