Post by speedsterboy »

hHi there,
wondering if the easily available vw dropped spindles fit on early preA/ A cars? If so who makes the strongest ones available?
anyone done this?

cheers

Go for pre '54 oval link pin drops. Bolt straight up. KCW are best but CB ok... Early pre A fine but not an A... tried it on a few occasions!

Any idea if those dropped spindles you mentioned will work on a C?

Dropped disk spindles I put together for my '54 gave me this stance.

I keep drum or disk spindles in stock.
Fully assembled or just the spindles you can build yourself.

Pre - A right now in stock.

Working on a set for A/B cars at the moment.

I'll post when / if I can make them work.

Here's a set on a VW with B brakes, and I just sent a set to a guy for his '60 356 as well. No complaints and as far as I can tell they look "pretty" good

Not sure what there is to dislike about them...unless you don't like them being drilled for the 5 x 130 pattern to run Fuchs

So what about 'c' cars with disc brakes? I only want a small amount of drop on my car, i'm hoping i can do this on the beam. Anybody tried this??

Yup, the same with a T6 'B' with drums. Is it possible?

Hi All
the front axle of a 356 has adjusters built into the middle of it which should allow you to wind it down a sensible amount without trashing ground clearance or ride etc , the advantage a dropped spidle gives is that you can lower the ride height without loosing ride quality though ground clearance obviously suffers , the rear end can be lowered on the splines which is more involved and time consuming than getting under the front of the car with some spanners , any height adjustment should be followed with tracking adjustments and that applies to the rear too, shame a nice set of B drums were mullered , why not just stick a disc kit on it, Pre A's do not have the built in adjusters , I suppose VW adjusters could be fitted though it would be a pain,
I am a person of simple pleasures so if you don't have any simple pleasures to offer me, beer, pizza or Porsche bits etc kindly leave me be, XX.

Mine's down on the adjusters and a further almost 3" with it's 'dremelled' slots. Ride was appalling until I swopped to fresh, shorter Konis but it handles incredibly. The rear just drags it's arse vw style but i've come a cropper after catching the sump drain bolt on a level crossing and cracking the block. Soon to be remedied as I get ready to throw more money at it... my old '53 had CB oval spindles and drove a treat but bottomed out too often needing a new spare well after a few hundred miles

Edit: Just found the CB dropped spindles if anybody's interested? 2.5" drop and fit any early link pin axle...

When I had CB spindles and 356A brakes on my '54 Oval, I had a slight clearance problem between the backing plate and wrist /pin. I'm not sure if the same issue is with porsche wrist thingy (I don't know what it's called in english, sorry). So slight clearancing was needed, this pic will tell:
