I have a confession to make. I was the twit that looked at Exchange & Mart 30 years ago and thought I could just about afford it, but £ 6000 was a lot of money and the running costs would be too high. So I passed on a fair looking Lamborghini Miura SV. The £ 300,000 would have come in useful today.

With this in mind I have been searching through Pistonheads for a useable bargain future classic sleeper.

£ 60k and popular when new due to the Ferrari involvement in its design , how about a 57,000 miles Maserati 3200 manual. Yours for just £ 9990

Or for our over conjested streets an auto at just £ 12995

How about a highly rated Honda NSX. This one has £ 5k of performance mods and a set of ghastly BBS go faster wheels but yous for £ 14,250

How about a 50,000 mls LHD Lancia Delta integrale 16 V for £ 5500. Just try keeping up with one

If it has to be new. This 06 zero miles Alfa Brera Pro Drive special edition is yours for £ 24,995

would your 911RS keep up with this BMW Alpina V8 with switchtronic. 340BHP gives 0-60 in 5.7 and 174 MPH. £ 5995 takes it

Finally a Vauxhall engined Lotus Espirit for £ 2995

Maserati 3200's are stunning value now and still seem like £50k worth to me!!!

However for mega Performance for very little money that M5 Alpina is amazing

1983 i think it was.. classic and sportscars,
i made a hit list of ferrari dino's, DB4s and Muiras all around £5k each.
I almost persuaded my Mum (in my mind) on the merits of buying a Dino instead of the new metro she was just ordering..

I could have made 2 fortunes over if she had invested in my fleet.

i was only 9 at the time though.

One of my biggest mistakes car-wise (& I've made a few!) was not buying an Aston Martin DB4 (that I had done a fair bit of mechanical work on) that was offered to me for £900 in ~ 1994 ...

The problem here is that none of these cars is nearly as rare, or bonkers-looking, as a Miura. The NSX might one day be worth something, what with them not selling any and the Senna link.

They're all still bargainous, though. I'd so have that NSX, minus the grotty wheels.

wow DB4 for nine hundred quid , I sold a gearbox less project DB4 in '97 for ten and a half thousand, you did drop a clanger there, as for the "bargain buys" listed there the only one with any real heritage is the Lancia and you may have a chance at maintaining it for reasonable money too.

Not these ones - just mass-produced legislation-derived boxes-for-getting-around-in. Really nice, but not special.

probably so, but if you fall in love with the shape of a car (in my case the 3200GT) it does make it special and desirable.

No idea if i will ever have the cash to buy one but a close friend of mine is getting quite serious about getting one. Apparently the 2nd generation (which lost those cool hockey stick lights) is a much better car with all the problems ironed out? (or at least as many as you can iron out with a so called italian supercar)

I always thought it was sad when they changed the rear lights, they we're a real defining feature of the car and very original!

could not agree with you more. My friend who is considering buying one will probably end up going for a later one with the "honda prelude" rear lights cos its supposedly a better car. He even looked to see if the panels / parts were reverse changeable so he could get the newer car and retro fit the nicer lights but i dont think it can be done.
