Hmm, I've been looking into manufacturing a home brewed design of such a thing since my dynamo failure on the way to CLM this year. I reckon I might be able to do it for less than that with any luck.
i cant answer your question even tho i have a 912 and a Beetle.
It might be worth phoning Machine 7 and speaking to Michael for some advice. He is very helpful and will give you straight advice even though sometimes it might not be what you wished to hear. Worth a call?
Sticky about interchangeable parts with VW on this page says:
'Cooling fan, generator and pulley (from 40hp VW also)'
Sounds good to me. Question is whether generator stand/oil filler fits, thats probably the sticking point. Might drop Machine 7 a mail, we could be on to something here, for a 130 quid!
Someone at 356 registry will probably know, but dont want to tread on Rod Emory's toes.
Edit - just checked the M7 and Emory pics side by side - the oil filler attachment is different. So close..altho just needs an adaptor I guess.

Hi,
i've just bought the emory alternator conv kit for my roadster, but i'm pretty sure it's not the same stand : emory is making special cast aluminium stand for his kit, and I think he's the only one making it.
sur it's not cheap
the alternator is a bosch model for Käfer

P.S.
didn't get it now, soon in a us car coming back in a boat
Yep, I'm sure the machine 7 bug pedestal is different to a 356/912 pedestal hence the hefty price tag on the emory one. However I work with castings and am looking at the possibility of making a one off or limited run of alternator pedestals for the 356/912.
The 12V VW dynamo is a bigger diameter to the 6V ones, which is the same as 356/912, so a known conversion the other way is to run a 12V 912 dynamo on an older 30hp VW engine that has the cast in dynamo stand. The VW alternator runs the same diameter as the VW 12V dynamo with the added complication of the big dynamo 'lump' fouling the stand, hence the different stands for alt/dynamo. The height of the stand might also be an issue. Casting up a new stand shouldnt be a real issue though?
