well with oils it's a different type I would say at different times
what I mean is if the engine is new and you know it from new then you can use a semi oil but you will need to talk with Mike or Andy on the grades. You would use a mineral oil for running in on.. Well w certainly did with any engine rebuild we did with the diesels. I am sure it's the same with these air cooled..
If you don't know what the condition of the oil is eg no history then I would be a little weary of modern oils as it could clean the engine ( as most modern engines do, trouble is it's going to put it all though the oil cooler, bearing and other nasty area's for catching all the built up crap.. so get some advise from Andy or Mike on oils for an older engine rebuild. I know what I would use but then it's my engine..
If I have not idea of an engines past and I am running it then I use straight 30 till I have time to take it down alittle to have a look. Abit extream but I know where I stand with that oil..
as with any subject like this different people will have different views
Oh and Scout40 ... yeah er I had defo left by then... I must admit to being very cross when I had heard it happened, because of all the people in our team did say some thing could happen if money is not spent in certain area's and contractors with drills are not kept under control...drilling holes all over the place and just using expanding foam to keep 30,000,000ltrs of water back yeah right

you did get a nice new garage floor out of it..
