David,
The HP Gain is very small - the only reason to use them (unless you are doing it for the Sound) is that the Cam Timing is adjustable with the Scat Ones - but you have to know what you are doing
Not suggesting for moment that you do not - but Cams and Cam Timing is not a simple subject - It is the Brain of the engine

Mike, thanks for the reply hope business is good. Yep im aware of the small gain but any gain is worth having when you only have 90bhp if your lucky. Plus i like the sound - less like a beetle. Any idea whats available. I looked at gene berg but cant find a supplier in UK.

I do not know of a supplier in the UK - you will have to find a stockist in the US - sorry but I do not know of one offhand

cam gears
Well I found a set made by a company that I heard are ok and for only £90 I will have that tiny extra Hp and a cool race engine sound. Still waiting to find out how bad the crank is.

Cam gears
Dave at Ringwood suggested Saunders in Cadnam. They are testing as we speak. They think it needs a second under grind.
Ouch.
Hope it passes ok or I will be saving pennies all year.

that's the guys I did speak with them when I was looking to do my engine and they past all my questions.. test. Unlike a few others..
Yeah right mate I know the one you mean the same as the beetle.........sound of feet..( mine ) leaving his shop very quickly with crank in hand....
what bearings are you using?
Second under is fine mine is second under.. as long as it's ground right and at the top of the tollerance then you have a good starting point.
I managed to get some second under NOS bearings not cheap about $500+ a set
not sure the cost on the new bearings about at the moment and also there are questions about how good a fit they are over the old ones. But the process has changed alot eg where they are made.. Mike has done alot of research onthis and I also did a bit .. the NOS ones are about still but in the hands of collectors I have a spare set of 1st under but it's rare to find a crank 1st under now.. but I may have one coming from Ca along with a case..plus a load of spares I might build up a standard engine from all the parts..

Mike there is a huge debate about this both sides of the pond.
i know of a healty split of non treated and treated cranks and both parties have success.
My personal view point is that the process does go to a reasonable depth into the metal surface and i feel that a second under is not a huge risk with there still being some harding of the material but with modern oils and better filtration in todays engines should out weigh the risk. Also the modern owner is alittle bit more careful with their cars warming up from cold before pedal to the metal.. not like our germans in the old days.. start the car drive to the freeway.. hit the gas!!! and it's just lifted off the cold in the guage!!
There is also the other flip of the coin that there is and can be damage to the cranks from the heat treatment which can warp the crank. I know this can also be fixed but still it's a worry.
i think this is a two camp argument Mike. Both firmly have their feet under the table

Straight Cut Cam Gears - Hardening - Filtration and Oils
Mark,
You are correct - I was having a little brain fade
2nd under is probably (?) OK
3rd Under will almost certainly go through the hardening
I do not agree with you on better filtration - it is the same filtration system unless you add a proper Full Flow System
As for oils that is whole new debate - the exclusion of Zinc and Phosporus by the oil producers is shortening the life of our cams
