Won't start - advice please

Hi jh,

IIRC 912E sparkplugs are the same as fitted on the 3.2 911 Carrera

FWIW I did no work on Fudge this Sunday cos i is full of cold and feel rather Sh*tty.
Somebody tells me that today is the #1 day for throwing a 'Sickie'.

Sorry to hear you're struck down Rick. Thanks for the steer on the plugs - halford definitely had Bosch plugs for the 911 but wasn't sure they'd be good for the 912e. And the boys in the shop had no clue.

Hate this time of year when there is no daylight to do anything after work - all you folks with garages..well...envy!!

The good side of all the car woes is that I had an excuse to uncover the Karmann Ghia. Fired up first time and was going like a train......until that is I ran out of petrol on the motorway...in heavy traffic...and didn't have enough momentum to get completely onto the hard shoulder. That fuel guage has fooled me so many times already that soon as I have daylight I am going to get to the bottom of that electrical gremlin once and for all.

Waiting for the weekend now to try the 912e again.

According to Pelican Parts , 912E takes NGK BPR6ES plugs.

Weird thing is that if you check the plugs for 914s , they say :
BOSCH WR7CC-M14 or NGK BP5ES-M220

The 2 liter 914 has the same engine , so why different plugs ?

probably because they were US only and had all the smog pump, air injection b*llocks fitted from new. Just spec the plugs as per a 914

Hey folks. Changed out 2 sparkplugs and the car has fired up ... yippeeeeeee.....but.....question for you of course.......i found it an absolutely bbbbtch to remove the passengerside sparks but got there eventually. Now I had planned to change all the sparkplugs but the driver's side has even less accessibility. Should I persist or just leave 'em now that the car starts? (I kinda know the responses i think)


Now, the first 912 forum advice from me as opposed to to me: if you are replacing the inlet manifolds any time be absolutely sure to check/replace the spark plugs too. One the manifolds are in (specifically the CSP ones) it is a nightmare to access the sparkplugs!!!

get yourself on of those Porsche sparkplug spanners, makes it dead easy, I think the tool is the same on most Porsches. 924, 944, etc.

Be careful when you put the new ones in as they go in at a funny angle on those heads.

Nige is there a special one of those for a Porshe? I have a t-wrench from halfords but there just isn't enough clearance from the inlets to get at the plugs.

Its a much shorter version of the tool with the spring on. I acquired one our of my mates 924 before he sold it, its also standard in the 911 tool roll/kit.

I put a fully charged battery back into Fudge and she started up straight away on this cold frosty {-3c} morning. Got the front bumper, side panels and valance off for re-painting and removed the front wheels to replace the old 205/60/15 Bridgestone's with 195/65/15 FALKEN ZE912's

As for removing spark plugs. Well I know from expeience removing them on my friends 356B T6 Cabrio is difficult to say the least but a 3/8" ratchet and plug socket will work.
Fudge is still on FI and a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet and plug socket works ok for me.

Hey there Mark,
Back on the road and loving it - being honest (and you'll hopefully know all about this already!?) 1997(Jsus I just read this again - I'm just decade behind - i meant 2007. Also just read your last sentence about buying her back ) was all about junior jh - the 912e was totally an impulse buy at not the ideal time he being only a couple of months or so old - so i haven't really dedicated the time i should have to my first year of ownership.

Still, though the miles haven't been piled on and though I have had a few "dispair" moments I am happily a lot more confident about 912e ownership at a moment (until the next thing goes wrong).

Finally fitted new tyres at the weekend; still need to get a pro to balance the carbs out after all the messing about (the performance is great but maybe the fuel mixture is a little to high); I have one leak to source then; and finally I want to get the paintwork seen to before it gets too bad - not too long a list. Hopefully all the other bits stay together so i can rack up a few k mile on the clock.

Couldn't help noticing a new P member in your house - 964 Carrera 4!!!

Such a nice feeling when it fires up after being quiet for a while isn't it. Read your entry in PCGB regularly these days - you're a hell-of-a-guy for flying the 912e flag fair play to you. I see that the club are making an Irish trip to Westport in May - Westport is my home town. Unfortunately, I have to live in Dublin to make enough dough to keep #1916 + family going and the trip is from Mon-Fri
