Red Alternator Light always on when engine is running

Post by Garfield »

OK folks,

My '68 911T is ill.

Now I'm thinking the alternator or the voltage regulator could be dead.

Is there anything else I should check before I start to take the fan to pieces ? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I would check all the connection both at the battery end and also from the boxes in the engine compartment, could be as simple as corroded connector.

Thanks, I'll check the connections.

If one had been stupid enough to connect the battery terminals the wrong way around, what would have gone pop first.....

Check your fuses, this may give you a clue, but alternator diode pack could well have taken a big hit. Were there big sparks ?
If your ignition switch was on, then the CDI (if it has one) box could have gone. Does it still whistle, ?
The radio could be fuse protected, check this.
There is probably little else really, unless you've got modern accesories plugged in, and these are very often reverse polarity protected.
Good luck
