Definately on the right track Mark, wish I could be there to lend a hand
Check Valve clearances
Warm it up & run the compression test
Then wind that mixture screw all the way in on #4 (not tight
The trick is to get the fastest speed with the least amount of fuel.
Mine is definately running on the rich side but I don't have any popping/backfiring at any speed, so for now I'll leave it alone but it's something I do hope to rectify when I really dig into the Solex's
