Definately on the right track Mark, wish I could be there to lend a hand

Check Valve clearances
Warm it up & run the compression test
Then wind that mixture screw all the way in on #4 (not tight  ) and back it off 1/4 of a turn until the idle changes (may need to go another qtr turn after this as well), fingers crossed you should hear the engine note change when it's firing properly. if you've got to go out more than 3.5 full turns you probably know it means you might need bigger jets :?

The trick is to get the fastest speed with the least amount of fuel.

Mine is definately running on the rich side but I don't have any popping/backfiring at any speed, so for now I'll leave it alone but it's something I do hope to rectify when I really dig into the Solex's

Let us know how you get on & good luck mate :)

no nothing like that on no 4 which is why I am going to recheck the valaves and do a compression check on no4 and then I know I have covered the angles..

it does seam that the jets are not right but I can't go too far that way with this spare engine... once it's running ok I am going to leave it for a while and just enjoy it.. and get on with the spare engine..
