912E gear box

when corky set the the idle it seemed it was happy at about 1100.
1400 seems high. As Nige said must be the air

anyways how do you hear the engine when your making brum brum sounds

On start up (after it has settled down) mine idles about 1000. After a bit of a run, it seems to idle around 1100 or 1200. Maybe a tad high?

Re gearbox... mine seems fine even with 228k on it!!! having got used to using it, I dont really have any issues at all other than slotting it into first at lights etc. That could be clutch though?

Forgive my ignorance, but the inspection panel referred to is persumably the one on the trans tunnel in front of rear seats?

yes that's the panel, very similar to a bug linkage in some ways.

Bit of a own up time here. The original linkage the 912e had broke apart within the first month or so of me owning it, it was at a weekend and needed to running so I manage to limp to my dad's workshop. He's a wood man so no engineering tools other than routers, circular saws, chisels, etc. Using part of the old linkage we remade the bush parts in MDF as a get you home measure that lasted 6 years. DON'T worry John you won't find any other shortcuts or DIY disasters. Honest

Tell you the truth Nige you could say you patched it up with some old granny knickers and I wouldn't mind. I'm just thrilled that I don't have to get the box dropped and my wallet (and marriage!) broken apart.

I've been holding off until i get the right parts in the post to be sure to be sure but from driving with my DIY and your "admission":) of your DIY Nige I'm pretty much 100% sure its all sorted out. (on that note, I don't know what the story is with the post from the UK to Dublin - I haven't got those items Nick posted and that log book, Mark, never appeared).

Want to get it all legal and sorted so I can start to use it a lot more and get to work on those other little bits and pieces. Needs a good weeks driving I reckon

Sweeeeeeet. Been sick as a small hospital for a week now so not been very interested (could have been brought on by the gearbox shock) but after getting those bushing from Nick's and fitting them I seem to be recovering fast

Took the motor for a spin on some windy roads and motorway and the gearbox was sweet as honey. Little bit of a gentle 'reminder' getting down to 3rd sometimes but rest of the time I had Z E R O problems - that gearbox is well up for it for a long time to come I reckon (and hope!). Really reckon you'd never have sold, Mark, if you could feel what the box is like without the mdf

Rang the folks I had booked to look at the car next week but could only get an answering maching. Just said I'd sorted the problem and wouldn't need the service just yet. Asked them to ring me but they didn't. I'll give them the benefit of doubt for now.

Still idling a little bit on the high side. Nige, I checked those springs and they are still attached. Looking at the screws though for sure the righthand one is screwed in a good few turns less than the left - would there be a reason for that? Or is that a stupid question - with twin carbs are they pretty much independent of each other - i.e. like set up independently? A lot of VW'ers have twin setups but my Karmann Ghia is a plain vanilla.

- no parking fines and, more importantly, I'd imagine, no speeding tickets

I'm in D12.

Anyway, folks, I am a real happy camper tonight. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement. This forum rocks rocks rocks.

oh, one more thing before I bail - Nige, I'm considering putting some seatbelts in the back. I know from a previous post that you have kid(s?) and was wondering if there any reason why you didn't? I have read the posts on here about reinforcing the read parcel shelf,etc. but it all seems doable.

good job i wrote my address on the back if undelivered.
Looks like water had got on it some how as you couldnt read the address from the water staines

First class in the post tomorrow. Second time lucky!

As for the carbs the screws dont have to be the same. the carbs were Balanced so not to sure why its ticking over to fast. Maybe give Corky a ring and see what he thinks. or drop him a email. he is a very cool chap so im sure he can give you some ideas.

Im missing the car but happy its gone to a good home.
i got a new toy for the summer to help the pain

what Mark says regarding the stops, just turn them a quarter turn each out and see if that settles the idle.

Rear seat belts, I just let him roll around in the back

I never fitted his car seat in the back, he was still in his rear facing seat that was too deep for the back anyway. He always rode shotgun with me in the front. Seat belt good have done with being a touch longer to help fitting but once it was in, it was in!

You could lookout for some rear belts from a later 911 and fit those, I think the fitting points are there. Drop a wanted ad on the IB forum, I know some of the guys are stripping out there interiors for lightness so you might be lucky.

Changing the gearbox oil to Swepco stuff might help, do a search here, there are quite a few who have made the change and it has helped the shift no end. Its a relatively cheap upgrade.

Ha! Fantastic looking machine Mark. Prefer the 4 wheels between me and the road myself but you'll have a bunch of fun on those roads around your place.

Great that the log book exists - i rang the dvla yesterday to see what the story is with the new one i ordered a couple(?) of weeks ago. It'll take "at least 2 more weeks" before they send it to me.

Thank for those tips, Nige. I know I can pick some belts up from the local GSF - 2point would be doddle to fit but I think a baby seat would need 3point. Truth is i don't even know if there is a baby seat on the market that would fit in those tiny seats.

About tiny: funny thing I didn't expect is that my Karmann Ghia has so much more storage space that the 912.
