912E gear box
Hi all
as you know i have sold my 912e.
Turns out they think the gear box is on its way out.
Whitch knocks me for six as i used it everday before i had the mot work done over winter.
I belive its a 915box in the car Q Nige.........
i belive that John the new owner has been quoted alot of £££ to even take a look. Anyone know where there is a second hand box knocking about. I feel bad for John as this is the last thing i wanted for him.
cheers

dude the box was rock solid in September, you've put b*gger all miles on it. You had to be smooth and slow sometimes to put it into first and occasionally third but it was never stiff or lumpy certainly not on its way out OK its done some miles but its had half the power put through it than any other. Firstly check the gear shaft coupling under the inspection panel. Clutch disk is virtually new, maybe the clutch cable/lever has been damaged whilst in transportation as it does hang low.
No way is that gearbox trash unless it been put into first instead of third.
BTW its a 923 unit I think, basically a 915 with different ratios on first, maybe second as well to allow for the lower power of the 4 cylinder unit.

I hear what your saying mate..
i wounder weather the place he has took it to is trying it on. It has to be something simple. I was Fine on the test drive. Plus fine all last year.
I feel bad for the guy tho, I cant belive the box is as bad as this place he took it to say. "im not saying john is making up tho"

My 912 E box was still good I had like nige a small crunch on the odd times when it went into 1st and later on if I went from 4th to 3rd really quick it would crunch 1 out of 3 times of going it..
So I changed the oil and used abit of oil treatment and it never did it again...
It's always worth checking out the simple stuff first..
Boy there are some people out there willing to take your money..
The worst I knew of local was a VW guy who to be fair is known and I know him well , to being VERY fair and VERY straight. a club members car came in and the car was wineing.. so he said it was the gearbox so my mate who was working with him at the time between jobs was asked to strip and rebuild the box on a 55 Beetle.. so he did it and there didn't seem much wrong with it.. anyway test drive the wineing was still there.. my mate thought straight away it was a rear wheel bearing he changed it prob solved.. customer still got the gear box bill ..... not good.
glad you got it sorted it was a nice car that white one, even if Nige owned it.

Wow. Fair play to you Mark for starting this thread. I was pretty stunned the other day and now I'm just totally confused....
I took a look at the bushings at the rear that evening and they had completely disintegrated. I'm mean they literally didn't exist! So I rigged something up and took the car for a spin and had zero problems with the gears (Nick is sending me on the right bushings now which is great - fab guy to deal with).
My confusion? This guy that I took the car to comes very highly recommended by 4 different people (independently). I want to trust him. I want him to take lots of money off me in the years of ownership to come for servicing and fixing this and that. All I can think is that he feels there is something more wrong with the box but it seemed fine to me. I'll wait to put on the correct bushings and see if all is fine. I understand from Nick that if more fundamental things are shot the cost is high but even a five minute search on the internet screams 'check the bushing at the rear first and foremost' and they are soooo easy to check..........I'm just confused.
Anyway, Mark, thanks a million for caring enough to post. Rest of you thanks for the advice, etc.
I'll let you know how i get on.
Oh, BTW, while I'm here: the car seems to idle a little bit on the high side (1400ish) which seems weird given that it was just sorted a couple of weeks ago by Corky. What do you think - is that high?
