1969 911 T - Slate Grey (the bitsa)

Post by Ferdynine11 »

• 1969 911T

• Slate Grey (originally Polo Red I believe )

•2.4E motor built to S-spec on MFI

• S-spec brakes

• Mike Bainbridge gearbox

This is my second LWB and my second car bought through the DDK community — the first being a 2.2 Albert Blue RHD E.

Image

There are a few older threads on the current car from Graham (previous custodian), so rather than rehashing the history of the car up again I thought I’d just start a fresh one and document my time with it.

I bought it in 2023. Graham had put a lot into the car — engine upgrade (with help of Nick Fulljames), suspension tweaks, and various other bits — but interestingly hadn’t actually done many miles in it over his 4–5 years of ownership.

For me it ticked the right boxes: something I wouldn’t be too precious about, decent performance (circa 200bhp), and (to my eye at least!) plenty of curb appeal.

Image

Once I got over the slightly wonky “Porsche” script on the deck lid and what I’ll politely call an average paint job, I took it over to JAZ for a post-PPI.

Image

Unsurprisingly there was the usual list of little jobs to sort (when isn’t there…), including a fresh set of Pirelli CN36s all round plus one for the spare.

The aim from day one was simple — get it into good shape and actually use it properly. European trips, Wales runs, maybe the odd track day… all the things I’d planned with my last car but never quite managed.

Since then it’s mostly stayed as-is. Routine maintenance, looked after by JAZ, and one main change — swapping the big 420mm wheel for a 370mm Springall lightweight Momo-style one, which feels much better suited to the car.

Image

There have been a few “moments”…

A sticking horn button kept East London well entertained for a while before eventually killing the horns completely.

Also had a memorable early breakdown at the entrance to the Blackwall Tunnel — equal parts exciting and slightly terrifying!

Now about three years in and it’s been an absolute blast.

Other than the usual local weekend drives, so far it’s done:

Two Pyrenees trips

Image
Image

A couple of Wales runs

Image
Image

A Goodwood track day (brilliant — would definitely do again)

Image

And a Spain trip planned later this year Image

Plans going forward are pretty minimal. Might swap the driver’s seat for something a bit more period/sporty (bucket seat maybe), and headlights could definitely do with an upgrade so I can actually see at night…

Other than that, the plan is just to keep using it and enjoying it — it does exactly what I wanted it to.

Hopefully catch a few of you and your cars at this year’s DDK meet.

Will get some photos up from future trips when I get a chance.

Cheers Image

Excellent - sounds like you're getting plenty of good mileage out of it !

I always thought that car sounded like a a great basis ...

Agreed - it’s got a bit of history like most old cars, but for a car to get out and drive it’s got good bones - it’s not going to win any shows but for a car to hustle along, it’s up there…..

So far, so good! The roads in Spain are on a different level in my experience, so looking forward to it……

Annual service time at JAZ, so took the opportunity to sort a couple of niggles. The standard headlights have always been a bit underwhelming, so swapped in some Nightbreaker H4 bulbs—noticeable improvement already. Also took the advice to upgrade the fuel lines while it was in.
All set now and ready for the first proper run of the year: a trip over to Wales, joining a friend in his Midnight Blue 996 C4S with Savannah interior. Should be a good one……..

Road trip time. Plan was simple: meet at Reading services, take a steady run along the M4 to Chepstow, then peel off and find something a bit more interesting en route to Baffle Haus for coffee and a late breakfast.

Image

Standard start, but once off the M4, things immediately improved. The run in set the tone nicely—good roads, light traffic—but it was just a warm-up.

After a quick stop, we headed towards the Black Mountains. Proper bit of road this: memorable views, some twisty sections (despite speed restrictions), and easy to see why it’s featured in so many You Tube videos over the years.

Image

While we were there, a small film crew were running a bike up and down—felt for the rider in full leathers as we stood around in T-shirts. Wales, April… not complaining.

Image

After a few photos of our own, we made our way over towards the old Military Road north of Brecon. Lovely drive just getting there. Parked up for a breather (for us more than the cars), and got chatting to another Porsche owner in a 996 Turbo on his way to meet friends for their annual run—20 years strong, which says it all really.

Image

Image

He shared a few route tips before disappearing off at pace. I like the idea of a Turbo, but personally I’d want a bit more exhaust noise.

From there, a short loop, another fuel stop (inevitable), and then on to Tregaron for the night.

Image

Next morning, headed towards Rhayader and the so-called Chris Harris “Singer” road. Great stretch, with a stop off overlooking the reservoir.

Image

Recently resurfaced, which takes a slight edge off, and busy with bikes—some committed, some less so, and a few just… stopped in the road. Keeps you on your toes.

Onwards to Bala via the pass—quiet, and probably one of the best drives of the trip. Proper rhythm, no traffic, just the cars and the road.

Image

Image

Quick lunch at a very patriotic local café, then on to Pen y Pass. Dramatic, no doubt, but busy as expected. Glad to have done it, but not one I’d rush back to unless it was quieter.

Image

We looped back towards Bala to round things off and grab a few more photos before I made the call to head back to East London that evening rather than stay over as I had planned.

Image

Image

All in, around 750 miles over two days. The car didn’t miss a beat, and for these sort of road, I genuinely wouldn’t want to be in anything else.

You can see the appeal of something like a Caterham, but an early 911 just feels spot on—size, feel, and enough power (~200bhp) to make the most of it. The refreshed S calipers were excellent too.

Only slight downside: Pagid Blue pads. Great performance, but the low-speed squeal is… memorable. Not sure it went down too well rolling through the quieter Welsh villages.

Next up: pre-tour check at JAZ ahead of a 10-day trip to northern Spain in June. Looking forward to that one.

you were blessed with the weather !

As you say, early cars are perfect for these kind of roads. From my own experience, dont think you'd enjoy a turbo .

Look forward to the report from Spain ( Spain is my favourite place to drive )

Thank you - should be a good one - we are driving along the north coast towards Portugal, then down to Salamanca, if you know any good roads in and around that vicinity that I should experience, please feel free to share - we don’t have any set routes planned.

I think the excitement of the boost of a turbo will quickly fade - probably better to borrow a friend’s and then give it back and jump back into my old banger!

Cheers,

Simon

pretty much the route we did last year

viewtopic.php?t=73475&hilit

My 996 turbo was a peach and mildly modded to over 500 bhp .. was very quick, but ultimately I found it a bit boring
