My first Porsche... now with better pictures and X33!!

Post by RichiRich »

OK, firstly thanks to all that helped me along the way to my first Porsche. Bert, Max, Alan, Nick, John, (the list goes on...) - thanks for your helpful advice, patience, and putting up with my constant questions, PMs, and emails.

So what is it I hear you say?

Well it's not a Pre-73, as much as I love them, it's not the right time for me to own one yet.

It's not an IB 911 either - I almost bought a very nice original 1984 911 Carrera coupe.

I'm hearing some disappointment from some of you reading this, but I will say I did at least buy an air-cooled Porsche!!

It all started back in 1996 (I think); I used to walk to my local train station in the UK to catch a train to London every day, and quite often I'd see this particular Porsche driving around my town. Each time I saw it something was changed, the (louder) exhaust, lower suspension, alloys, etc, etc. When the car was shown in the Bad Boys (Will Smith) movie, I still thought it was a car I wanted, but couldn't afford... so here I am some 13 years later owning one.

For those that haven't guessed, it's a 1992 964 3.3 Turbo in Midnight Blue with only 127k km on the clock and a fully documented service history. I don't actually have the car with me in Germany at the moment, hence no pictures, but the guys at JZM (where I bought it) are currently having it valeted. It's originally a German car, first registered in Nuremberg, then Munich, then Saarbrücken (about 45 mins from where I live), then the UK for the last 8 years. It'll be nice to bring it back to it's home country and even more nice taking it back to the autobahns where all Porsches should live ;-)

That really does sound like fun in Germany!! A very interesting car.

If you are not there already, there is a 964 group that has provided me with a lot of very useful advice about my 964. You can find them on:

porsche964@yahoogroups.co.uk

I think there are a couple of German-based members, and one very convivial bloke in Luxembourg who has been known to do the odd quick lap or two of the Nordschleife.

I still think you haven't lived till you've owned an early 911. Maybe, as you say, somewhere down the track . . . .

Enjoy it.

Not a bad start to porsche ownership. Makes my E engine seem a little underpowered. We need to see pictures though!!

Good choice Richi! I had a 964 3.3 Turbo about 4 yrs ago - absolutely loved it!!! Wish I'd never sold it (although I do seem to say that about every Porsche I've had... )

Will look forward to seeing some pics. I'll try and post some of mine later..

This is a long post, but I just need to air my frustration - so you don't have to read it if you don't want to.

It was all going so well... that is until the Fraud Team at my UK bank got envolved :x

I had two thirds of the money for the car in my UK savings account and so only needed to the other third from my Luxembourg bank account, which all went well and on time - as you would expect from one of the top banking countries in the world.

I then arranged to transfer the whole amount in one go to JZM, where I purchased the car. I made sure there was enough time for the money to get there with 2.5 days to spare, so that I could pickup the car this Saturday (Aug 29th).

I received a call from JZM on Wednesday this week saying that their bank saw the money come in and go out again. I though this to be very strange, nevertheless, I called my bank to find out what was going on. Basically, the Fraud Team had put a stop on the transfer thinking someone had gained access to my account details and was trying to empty it - whilst I appreciate them reviewing my transactions to protect me, I really wished that they had called me to ask, they had 4 days after all to do it.

After having had a discussion with the bank, they removed the stop, the only problem being was that they put the money back in my account!! I now only had 2.5 days to make a bank transfer which takes 4 working days. I asked them if there was a quicker way to get it there, to which they said I could come into a branch and do a BACS transfer which takes 3 working days - I don't think they were listening to me :x

After more discussions, the guy suggested that I book the money in cash at the bank - could you see me doing that, carrying £20k+ in cash to JZM, not to mention carrying anything above £10k in cash is illegal due to money laundering law (the guy on the phone had no clue about this - strange for a bank!)

Anyhow, I then had a brainwave of using my Visa Debit card (which has no limit) and paying with that. My bank said that it would be possible, but JZM would need to make multiple transactions for it to go through and not be stopped by the Fraud Team - top tip for theives there

After a day and a half, JZM managed to put the money through. Problem now is that it hasn't arrived in their account yet. My bank told me it has been authorised and it's just a matter of time - but it is not scheduled to arrive until tomorrow morning (Saturday) and £4500 won't arrive until next week.

I have a flight (unchangeable and non-refundable) and a Eurotunnel train booked and was looking forward to picking the car up all week, so now I'm just  - all that prep work and I'm stuck. I'm trying to negotiate with JZM, but somehow I don't see them letting the car go with the balance missing...

Rich, I hope it still happens on time. I have forgotten the number of times that banks (mostly RBS) have lost large amounts of money that should have been sent or received. One time they lost £75K from a house sale that disappeared for a couple of weeks into one of their "holding"accounts when it should have been in mine

Can't you get them to stop the £4.5k and swipe the card for the rest (or use a credit card?). Surely they should also have advised you to do a direct transfer (for a fee) which is the only way of transferring funds for a house sale.

They could only take £8k max cash.

All in all very frustrating though.

Cancel that transfer of £4500 and immediately order your £4500 in cash. Its not that much to carry and look a little bit non- suspect: have in in a money belt or in a reasonably safe place in your coat.

Have a (second) wallet in your coat in case you get mugged with 50 odd pounds in there and a few cards (which you can cancel after the mugging).

The times are definetly gone where you could just go in and withdraw a good chunk of money.
