Strut identification
I'm trying to identify the front struts on my car so I can buy some new inserts.
I know they are not Bilsteins ( no lower roll pin) , so that leaves either Koni or Boge
Am i right in thinking the Koni struts are tapered near their bottom?
Here is a photo of my strut :
I think this is a koni strut with the tapered lower ...

I might have answered my own question here, as it looks like mine are Boge ... or am I missing something?

James, I replaced the inserts in mine a couple of months ago and took the opportunity to have the strut bodies powder coated - mine are definitely Koni and definitely look like the second picture - as you say tapered at the bottom
so I reckon yours would be Boge

so we think they are boge struts ?
They also have a single layer of black paint on them which would tie into the boge thing.
So if someone has fitted Boge's from an SC to my car, I wonder what the inserts are ?

They could either be boge inserts, or the bilstein insert for boge struts (or if you are really unlucky, very badly fitted koni inserts as per my 2.4T when I bought it)- you'll only be able to tell by taking them out.

thanks Mark
They do look similar.
IF all Konis have the change in diameter along the strut, it shoul dmean I have Boges fitted.
Just a shame I can't find any makers stamp, just a part number.

My 3.2 Boge's are stamped "BOGE" halfway up the strut mine have just been blasted and re-painted though so its easy to see you may have to clean them up a bit.hot66 wrote:thanks Mark

When ordering new inserts you need to be aware there was a change in 1985 so you need to determine which year you have. Not sure how significant the change was, when I swapped from the early ones to the 3.2 ones the only noticable differance was the nut that holds the insert in switched from an internal thread to external thread on the strut.

I've had a good check over my struts today & still can't find BOGE stamp. The is a stamp of a triangle with a P in it & a triangle with nothing in it.
Anyway here are photos of the top, which I hope will confirm these are BOGE struts?

I've put it all back together as I couldn't easilly undo the top nut , and was sure the bit I photographed could identifiy the strut make.
The inserts in the car allready don't really matter too much as I have decided to change them anyway at some point.
