Since we are on the subject…..

What’s the rules for the small font style front plates? “Bike” sized or similar description.

Is there any approved uses or are they just a case of getting away with it?

I looked into this and couldn't find a definite answer that they are allowed on cars. I know a traffic cop and he said as it can be read and would be captured by ANPR nobody is going to care on a 50 year old car. However he said strictly it should be full size on cars. I've not been stopped yet, but keep the full size one in the car just in case.

I often find that car parks with number plate recognition can't read my classic number plates

Good point Neil.
My wife's citigo also has the same problem for some reason in hospital car parks.

My 911 is a 73T but was imported in 'Y' reg/80's so i keep the modern colours as the car appears to be a Y reg 80's 911!

.

I've fitted a small front plate to several of my 'old' cars over the past 15 yrs & never had any problems - I just fit a std size plate for the MOT ...

Here's the one on my 1.3HF:

I have a smaller plate on the 355 and keep a standard one in the car with self adhesive tape, just in case the authorities pull me over and take issue. Not had to use it yet…

New plates arrived. Waiting for DVLA to catch up. Blu tacked on to see how they will look. Think they look pretty good IMHO.

If a cop takes issue I think you're most likely to get 14 days notice to rectify it, but they can give you a £100 on the spot fine. If you fail to rectify it or repeat offences up to £1,000 fine.

I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Bruce M wrote: Thu Mar 30, 2023 7:42 am I’m fairly sure in 1973 you had to use a yellow rear plate. Typically metal with plastic letters attached.

Obviously these days, due to a legal mistake with historic tax rules, you can use a black rear plate on a 1973. So basically pick whatever you fancy Image
DVLA forward dated the use of Black and White number plates to a vehicle registered before 1st January 1980, and that ‘Historic Status’

With effect from the 1st January 2021, there has now been a change and going forward, any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1980 are now not eligible to display the classic black and silver number plates despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Those vehicles with a construction date prior to 1 January 1980 will continue to be able to legally display black and silver number plates to avoid any undue costs of replacement.

Completely silly. Why did they choose 1980 when black plates went out in '73?

Must be an age thing but anything newer than a '72 displaying black and silver just isn't cricket.
