Black and silver number plates
Have been looking on Framptons website at black and sliver number plates and there are several styles. On a 1973 car, which style is generally considered the most correct?
Choices are:
Pressed aluminium
Ribbed acrylic
Smooth acrylic
the new plate will have 2 x numerals and 2 x letters.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

As far as I remember, there were no black & silver perspex plates available in 1973.
There is another option available (other than those you list) which is my preferred style - bevelled edge black metal plate with (separate) raised silver digits.
Here's an example from my old 356C:

Couple of period pics suggest smooth acrylic might not be anachronistic

Re: Black and silver number plates
I’m fairly sure in 1973 you had to use a yellow rear plate. Typically metal with plastic letters attached.
Obviously these days, due to a legal mistake with historic tax rules, you can use a black rear plate on a 1973. So basically pick whatever you fancy

Re: Black and silver number plates
DVLA forward dated the use of Black and White number plates to a vehicle registered before 1st January 1980, and that ‘Historic Status’
With effect from the 1st January 2021, there has now been a change and going forward, any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1980 are now not eligible to display the classic black and silver number plates despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Those vehicles with a construction date prior to 1 January 1980 will continue to be able to legally display black and silver number plates to avoid any undue costs of replacement.

Re: Black and silver number plates
That DVLA change doesn’t make sense to me. I know 1973 cars originally had yellow plates at the rear and white at the front but the silver black still look right on cars of that vintage since earlier models of 911 had that or similar style of plate. By 1980 I can’t remember many cars that silver/black plates would suit eg mark 3 Ford Escort. Even a Triumph Dolomite had a production run from 73 to 80 so it wouldn’t be right there either. I was only young then so maybe I am wrong…
Re: Black and silver number plates
I found an exception. The wonderful Austin Maxi had a production run from 1969 to 1981. The DVLA must have been thinking about this car when they made their change.
Ps I know nothing about the Austin Maxi so please don’t take offence. My dad did buy a new Triumph Toledo when I was a baby and he said it was absolutely terrible. This was then changed MkI Ford Escort 1300xl which they loved and had for many years.

Re: Black and silver number plates
I got the Framptons aluminium ones and I'm happy. I can't imagine ever getting a ticket, and the MOT tester always spots they're illegal just after he's issued the certificate. People are rightly going to cut you some slack on a nice old car.77DE wrote:Have been looking on Framptons website at black and sliver number plates and there are several styles. I'm looking for a pre-impact bumper 911S or other high-revving 911 to restore - please let me know if you see one.

Re: Black and silver number plates
It is true!
I have a (white) front plate stuck onto the front bumper under the rubber trim on a 2.4S glass bumper so slopes back a lot. Past the MoT for 32 years with no probs and 60,000 miles in the UK.
