Very excited , engine on test stand. I had sourced a knackered be gearbox and cut it down to attach starter motor to
Image

All ready to fire up

Image

Plugs out and cranked over to get oil pressure only for no1 son Tom to notice oil coming from left of engine dripping onto floor
Bollocks
Seems to be coming from the fan shroud
Me thinking will be from base of oil cooler only to find oil down the side of the cooler and what appears to be a hole at the top!
Sure enough when cranked over oil pours out of said hole
Positives
1.At least I know the oil pump works well
2. I am getting good at putting this thing together
Looks like I will have to wait after all

Image

Fortunately, I have another cooler but will need to test it beforehand somehow.
Internet search coming up.

and then at idle

was back firing a bit from cylinder 2, but adjustment of one of the screws sorted that out
just a few oil leaks noted, from the oil pressure sender unit, oil lines and from a push rod tube seal
so will wait until a sprung tube arrives and then fit into the car
unless a major catastrophe occurs Stanford hall here we come

Hi
Enjoying your write up
I am doing the same with my original engine after building up a spare that's in the car now
Still have leaks from a couple of pushrod tubes, thinking of using sprung tubes, at least you can remove and re-seal without removing the heads.

Where are you getting your tubes from ?

Anyone got experience of sprung tubes ?

Phil are you thinking about using the ones from http://www.precisionmatters.biz/push-rod-tubes.php?

The boys on the 912 bbs forum rate them.

Hi I thought about those but with time frame etc went for CSP tubes made in Germany can order direct or from machine7
Not cheap though
Very clever design and a doddle to fit you can buy individually but I did the whole lot
No need to remove the heads

Image

One regret of mine is not using them from scratch as you can see I tried to save a few bob by reusing old tubes.
Don't know why I did as I have spent quite a bit and have not scrimped anywhere else!
Should have listened to the Maestro
Ifin you reuse tubes you will be sorry!

engine in, first run out and after a while I thought was loosing power, but after stopping could smell brake pads. All 4 were pretty hot and sticking.
bemused as all newly built calipers and new brake lines. I had changed to a dual master cylinder. plan on changing all the brake hoses and trying again, what else could cause all 4 calipers to bind??
any ideas?

Have you checked for free play on the brake peddle master cylinder pin? You should have some free play before it actuated the cylinder. Dual cylinder pins are shorter than single. So you may not be releasing all of the pressure in the master cylinder as the fluid gets hot and expands.

Do a search over on the 912bbs on single to dual cylinder conversions

Thanks Sean. I remember researching BBS when I did mine
I fashioned my own pin from a bolt as didn't fancy cutting original down to size just in case
Image

Fitted 4 new hoses. £22 from euro car parts!
Quoted £44 on the net. I queried it when picked up and the assistant said he had given me an extra discount!
I didn't argue with him
Have backed off the actuator pin

Will test out tomorrow

All four wheels would suggest the master cylinder being applied. Good call changing the hoses if you don’t know when they were last done.

Spent the past week on putting my braking system back together. All I can say is that I have spent the past few days with bleeding brakes!

Refurbed callipers new master cylinder and plenty of air locks! Three litres of brake fluid. New disks and pads in the post
