The engine was from a 77 3.0 Carrera, books state 200hp as standard which is enough in an early car I think, I used my old 2.2 exhaust system on the engine, which I’m not sure has increased hp, but it sure does sound the part, quite deep at the low end and really really raspy at the upper end. I also used the 901/911 gearbox, so I might be loosing some hp to wheels through that, but hey I’m not complaining, the gearing is so short in the 70/71 901 that it makes it a really fun car to drive.
Also used the 3.0 K-Jet (CIS) which I’m lead to believe is set up for better throttle response than other 911 K-Jet systems, first impressions are it’s not as instant as carbs, but the only way I can best describe it is like a syrupy delivery at the low end (making it great for around town too), nice and torquey up until 4500rpm, then after that it feels like all hell is breaking loose, it literally flies up to the redline in a mad chorus of total and utter glorious raspiness, literally catapulting the car forward.
As far as extra weight is concerned, there’s not much in it, well not noticeable anyway, according to Mr Paul Frere the 3.0 Carrera engine weighs the same a the original 2.0 engine, so if that weight is ok in a early swb then I’d say it’s totally fine for a lwb. I also changed all my shocks which has made the car handle ooh just about 75% better
Oil temp is up a bit, so a wing mounted cooler/thermostat & lines are now on the shopping list over the winter, I’m also using the 11 blade fan from the 2.2 which has a larger pulley, so is probably running a bit slower and contributing to the higher temps.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have an absolute top bloke on board giving the engine a top end rebuild as well, who was also good enough to let me use all of his equipment to clean things up and get it looking nice while he did all of the harder stuff. I’m not shy of a set of spanners but there’s no doubt I would have struggled to do this at home, lack of space and equipment
So to sum it up, am I happy with my engine swap? not many ! Smiles for miles, this is going to be a real fun car to drive, Dyno can confirm after this afternoon’s quick passenger run around Kew, always great to see you buddy and I hope you have a totally brilliant trip.
Would I advise anyone to do the same? Yes absolutely, I thoroughly recommend it if you want a bit more power, like me can’t afford that 2.4s or 2.7RS spec engine and don’t mind a bit of time off the road, then this is the way to go IMHO, if you have the option of keeping your old motor, as I am, then do, everything can be changed back if you want to sell the car.
phew.. anyway that's my waffle over, I’m off on my jolly holidays for 2 weeks now, and already can’t wait to get back to wind this sucker up.
Here’s a gratuitous pic of the engine bay, note the backdated heat (before fan belt fitted, oh and a new breather pipe is on order
