3.0 conversion first impressions...

Post by Gilbert '71 T »

WOW GUYS…..I had my first day’s driving my 911 since the 3.0 engine went in today, I have been so excited over it I just had to share it with you, as I know you’d understand.

The engine was from a 77 3.0 Carrera, books state 200hp as standard which is enough in an early car I think, I used my old 2.2 exhaust system on the engine, which I’m not sure has increased hp, but it sure does sound the part, quite deep at the low end and really really raspy at the upper end. I also used the 901/911 gearbox, so I might be loosing some hp to wheels through that, but hey I’m not complaining, the gearing is so short in the 70/71 901 that it makes it a really fun car to drive.

Also used the 3.0 K-Jet (CIS) which I’m lead to believe is set up for better throttle response than other 911 K-Jet systems, first impressions are it’s not as instant as carbs, but the only way I can best describe it is like a syrupy delivery at the low end (making it great for around town too), nice and torquey up until 4500rpm, then after that it feels like all hell is breaking loose, it literally flies up to the redline in a mad chorus of total and utter glorious raspiness, literally catapulting the car forward. :drunken:

As far as extra weight is concerned, there’s not much in it, well not noticeable anyway, according to Mr Paul Frere the 3.0 Carrera engine weighs the same a the original 2.0 engine, so if that weight is ok in a early swb then I’d say it’s totally fine for a lwb. I also changed all my shocks which has made the car handle ooh just about 75% better  , so it’s even harder to tell if the back’s any heavier now, but once you point the car in the direction you want it to go and floor it, there's no fishtailing is just bites and goes for it. pure joy

Oil temp is up a bit, so a wing mounted cooler/thermostat & lines are now on the shopping list over the winter, I’m also using the 11 blade fan from the 2.2 which has a larger pulley, so is probably running a bit slower and contributing to the higher temps.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have an absolute top bloke on board giving the engine a top end rebuild as well, who was also good enough to let me use all of his equipment to clean things up and get it looking nice while he did all of the harder stuff. I’m not shy of a set of spanners but there’s no doubt I would have struggled to do this at home, lack of space and equipment  , Once I’ve got a bigger set up I’d be fairly happy to attempt this kind of thing myself.

So to sum it up, am I happy with my engine swap? not many ! Smiles for miles, this is going to be a real fun car to drive, Dyno can confirm after this afternoon’s quick passenger run around Kew, always great to see you buddy and I hope you have a totally brilliant trip.

Would I advise anyone to do the same? Yes absolutely, I thoroughly recommend it if you want a bit more power, like me can’t afford that 2.4s or 2.7RS spec engine and don’t mind a bit of time off the road, then this is the way to go IMHO, if you have the option of keeping your old motor, as I am, then do, everything can be changed back if you want to sell the car.

phew.. anyway that's my waffle over, I’m off on my jolly holidays for 2 weeks now, and already can’t wait to get back to wind this sucker up.

Here’s a gratuitous pic of the engine bay, note the backdated heat (before fan belt fitted, oh and a new breather pipe is on order  )

Nice work makes me even more eager to get my 3.2 rebuilt for transplant into my 72. One Q: did you swap your fuel pump from the back to the front as it would be in the original 3.0 are did you mount it at the rear as I would be on your early car?

I hooked up with darren yesterday and went for a blast in his red missile. I can only say that this engine is awesome, sounds so nice and revs SO clean. :drunken:

We went for a blast round the block in Kew and my face was :) thenDarren laid the pedal to the metal and I was like  this engine screams!! I must say I felt alittle inadequate and started to wonder if my black monster could handle this Banshie of a engine on a run.

Mean and pretty at the same time, this car has been put togeather so well. Money well spent the car has been transformed, I know its a cliche' but hell fellas since driving my black 911 I'm not that easy to impress.

Any of you guys looking for a performance upgrade for your early car I would seriously consider this conversion. In my opinion it looks better then the late 3.2 like I have as its more in keeping with the 70's.

Awesome car, awesome dude.. really happy for you Darren its a 'REAL' Porsche performance car now. We will have to go for a drive in the new year when I am back from Oz!!!!

Yes Steve I have relocated the fuel pump to the front (different pump), just on the outside of the smugglers box, i believe porsche did this to prevent vapour lock on the cis system when hot, you can buy the mounting kit from AFN for around £20, need two people to mount it though, one to hold it from underneath and the other to sit inside the hood to tighten it up inside the box. good luck with the 3.2 swap, that is going to be something 8) you'll love it i promise.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, especially Alam, mate your vocal delight on my first blat was priceless... yeeee-haaaaaw , you know I value your opinion as well, and your comments confirm the positive difference, makes it even all the more worth while. don't think it's quite there with the 'Black Beast' but there's only one way to find out

I have just got back from one last drive before I pack up for my holiday, and just wanted to say that the car just seems to get better and better, i'm really happy with it.

signing off now for 2 weeks :hello2:

3.0 litre

Will the 901/911 box handle the torque of the 3.0 litre it may be unreliable in the medium/long term.

A very clean installation Darren - well done.

Beware though, you've embarked on the 'slippery slope' - more than one Porsche, engine upgrade, etc ...

Have a good holiday.
