There is no spitting back in the carbs through the filters (classic K&N type)
The pops must be unburnt fuel and a lot of it.
Hot starting is impressivly instant, and the fuel is via a fresh in-line 'kit-car' type, 8mm bores throughout and a new solid state pump after filtering.
The clue here must be the fresh plugs (bog standard 3.2 ones that I happened to have for my 911) went in so nothing trick.
If you can reccommend a grade for carbs please tell me!
i do recall reading somewhere about a 'special' NGK plug grade for carbs that works. One of the zillion weber web sites somewhere.
I guess if I clean the current '3.2' plugs and the pops dissapear for a while but come back then we know it is the plugs.
I've been told to open the gap a bit on the plugs to help? Old Wives Tale??
Appreciate the interest and help.
V tempted by Jenvy injection or the PMO stacks and custom build from there.
Nice if I could simply take the 3.2 system with the old Bosch ECU and fit the lot to the PMO stacks.
Nice simple and works!

Graham, I should speak to Terry about plugs. After all, he raced that engine all over Europe with no problem! I would suspect that it's a combination of the less than ideal headers and carbs not quite right. When I drove it it started and idled like a well-mannered road car every time, hot or cold, on the 46mm Webers.
What a brilliant meeting, sunshine, crowds of people, and you and I went back with cars in one piece!
Cheers!

Thanks for the plug tip, will follow that up and try a set.
If it halves the problem it will be good.
Jonathan, the fuel has to be down there to explode so something isn't right, but I remember Terry's Nomad being a gem at Prescott all those years ago.
The plugs I took out Sunday are Terry's old plugs and some were different to the others.
Will check those numbers too.
The meeting realy was a top notch affair and it was great to go up and back 4 times for me with 3 gears (maybe 4 if I had tried for 4th)
Shelsley at it glorious best. Magic place.
I was overwhelmed at the way the Lola was received, there were a lot of top techies there who are leagues above me who were most complimentary which is great and very encouraging.
I need to try harder! (and learn to press the accellerator)

Found a few (more) problems with the Lola these last few days (spoilt myself yesterday and went to Donnington Park in the 911: was bliss).
The master cylinder to the rear brakes was all but siezed, so that is getting a seal kit soon, and the gearchange actually seems to work, but needs a full hearted run to really test, but i have 1/2/3/4th and reverse now. 5th is a silly idea, so wont bother.
There is one hill to go now, Prescott in early Sept and then the car is finished and will come apart for some work.
The plan is:
1
Turbo Thomas headers of the right diameter/equal length. Might ask him to have the car and do the whole thing if he will.
2
Repair and paint body (if i have the cash)
3
Spruce-up the suspension and the Koni's and revise the spring rates (it is a bit stiff)
4
Raise the front roll cage to give my knees more room to operate the clutch/brakes
5
Revise the super heavy clutch hydraulics (thinking of getting G50 parts and use them)
I would like to fit a WEVO inside the 915 and tighten the LSD a touch as it is almost non existant. Suppose I might as well refurb the box too?
Never done a box before so might have a go.
6
Fresh real hillclimb tyres and a trailer!
It should be a very relaxing winter compared to my last one...
This thread has turned into a bit of a blog, but i hope it still interests some of you!

So to the exhaust headers etc:
The stock headers from a 993 fit 3.2 heads? Correct?
Seen some stock ones on ebay just, and ther certainly are not equal length!
The difference in lengths from the cylinder to the 3 into 1 collector are miles different, but could (I suppose) be multiples of each other, ie the shortest is 1/4 of the longest, and the middle one 1.2 of the longest, 2 x the shortest.
Just how important is the primary length?

More inspiration from Roadrunner's pics from Monterey!

Just bolt on the extra 2 cylinders while you've got the engine out.........
Cheers!

Isn't that 908 just wonderful?
Have you seen the pic in last weeks Autosport of the 908 chased by 2 917's all in real blue/orange colours in the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca?
The 908 won.
Had a wrestle with the rear brake master cylinder the last 2 nights, the piston had all but seized, hence the dragging brakes at Shelsley. Might well account for the twitchy-under-braking too..all front, no rear.
The 911hillclimber mechanic (and mate) won that one too. (Trish is a dab hand at 'up-down-hold-up' routine)
Body back on this weekend before a run to Olton Park for the Gold Cup hopefully taking the wonderful 911 if it looks dry-ish.
A trip to Turbo Thomas is due VERY soon.
Let the winter rebuild begin

Should be racing the Lola Porsche at Prescott this weekend, but having trouble bleeding the brakes to a hard pedal!
The rear brakes were dragging hard at Shelsley so i added new seals to that cylinder and the brakes are spongy since...
I might yet finish my season as I started it in a very real car, my 37 year old 911!
