It was a great trip .... just about caught up on my sleep now ( couldn't sleep on the ferry

) .

Best bits were the Factory tour, the passes & the roads on the return run through France.

Early 911's are great for touring in .... and surprisingly we pretty much kept to the speed limits for the whole trip, only problem from my point of view is the S engine tended to coke up abit after being sat at 3600 rpm for hour after hour on the motorways.... 1st decent thrash round to 7200rpm resulted in a nice black cloud as it cleared its lungs

Averaged around 26mpg too.

Camera was set on wide angle + auto for most photos, although for some reason some of the photos came out a bit dark.

Mad Driver awards go to the Belgians

They're all off their rockers

We stayed in the Golden Leaf Hotel in Zuffenhausen which was travel lodge style but with its own underground car park & only a couple of minutes away from Porsche

Planning on doing a very similar trip in my own S in August. Where is that Swiss restaurant would very much like to visit that.

Also, did you have to buy one of those "green passes" to drive the S through Stuttgart ? Stuttgart is apparently in one of the new German green zones where you supposed to have got the emissions tested to allow the car in to the zone.

Which route did you take back through France.

Great photos too...really looking forward to this trip.

,great photos and write up James.I also did part of this trip as a 16 year old, I remember it well as it wasn't so long ago

Perhaps it could be a substitute for the coast to coast run in a couple of years time?

only James & Tracy bought their son .... my girls stayed at home with Granny ..... 2 kids in the back of a Porsche for that kind of trip would not have been relaxing

Luegibruggli hotel on the mountain behind Interlarken.....even I liked the view.

Our cars are the greenest on the planet........35 years old, never need recycling, never needed any dumping or crushing, only use oil and petrol on a limited mileage basis, rarely need recovered (unless your name is Gary) and will probably be around longer than some of the newer Porsche models we saw being built last week. No green pass for us.

We left Basel and travelled north on the motorway and then took a left over the hills to Nancy. Lunch at Hotel Al Agneau in Katzenthal which was the nicest meal in the most relaxed setting.........so much so that we all agreed we could have stayed there (right in the middle of a wine region, vines right down to the hotel on all sides) for a week.
North from Nancy to almost Metz then another left through a fantastic section of road to Verdun (good job the girls were in the car because I know James was just itching to plant the throttle through popular tree lined roads). Can't tell you enough about Verdun (look it up on tinternet). Coffee and croissants on the river/canal bank. Saw the two vintage Bentley's and and lovely girls' rowing eight over breakfast.....fantastic!

North for Zeebrugge and to the ferry....... Why is it 'Zeebrugga' and Brugge is 'Bruge' and not 'Brugga'?

Best post in ages! Wonderful trip to do, and a reminder to us all why we dabble in the ludicrous world of early Porsches.Surprised to hear your right foot didn't get the better of you guys, but then Mike's always been a bit pedestrian!! ;o)

we didn't actually drive into Stuttgart as Porsche is located on the outskirts in Zuffenhausen ... so no need for a green pass.

We did need a Motorway pass for Switzerland .... & the police did check this at the border crossing when we left the country.

Our route back up through france was sort of unplanned ... we just headed to different towns looking for food or accomodation ... got a bit hungry at one point

, but it all worked out for the best & my satnav came up with a fabulous route ( by chance rather than planning

)

I'd recommend it to anyone .. get a small group of friends together & just head off into Europe for some fun

Looks like you had a fantastic trip - thanks for posting the deatails & excellent photos James.

Like one or two others, I have driven many of those roads through the Alps (but also like some of the others, many years ago !) - your account & pictures has just made me determined to do so again in the near future ... maybe on the way down to Sicily for the Targa re-run next year ...
