What do you do if you lose your one and only key?

Del - another thought...

Do you have the original maroon plastic 'wallet' with Driver's Manual, Service Booklet, etc ? If so, the key number is often written on one of those documents.

Del - this is exactly the kind of thing that I do and it drives me MAD !!

I always leave my keys in exactly the same little pot on the kitchen worktop - oh except when I leave them in my jacket pocket that goes back into the wardrobe - or in my jeans that then go into the wash basket - or on that handy shelf in the garage - etc etc ..!!!
The keys are there - think man - think !! You switched off the engine - got out - grabbed the shopping from the Mrs (????) - too many bags - put the keys to one side/in your pocket - where they fell out on the garden as you walked to the house........it's so frustrating isn't it ?!! Could you get someone else to search the car/garage/garden/breadbin.....??!

If you can find the key number then there is a place in sw18 that cut one for me from the number.

It might be a long shot, but I have found money, keys in fact all sorts caught in the lip of the seal in our washing machine - worth a look?

Barry, I have removed the door lock and slowly dismantled it down the naked barrel. Thing is, i cant see numbers anywhere on it.

I also undid the ignition (Unscrewed the front round thing) I havent unplugged it yet incase i dont need to. The only numbers i found on there were around the top of the circle and had 5 digits on there. Is this what i should be looking for?

I have a blank key coming from Porsche at a cost of 13 quid. The parts man said that they dont have a key cutter but a good key cutter should be able to cut it using the numbers on the lock. As i say, there are no numbers on the door handle barrel etc and a five digit on the ignition but i dont know if this is the right number.

Does anyone know what the lock number should look like / where it would be?

Am posting my own reply to my own question cos i have just found out that the key number is on the cam arm (the grey metal triangular shaped bit) that the barrel screws into at the back end of the handle. Fingers crossed, the correct key is on its way over to me as we speak and in few days, everything should be as it was. All fingers, thumbs and toes crossed!

I know a place in London that can cut keys for all classic porsches from the barrel number. I recently took them the barrel from a 57 speedster and he cut me a key then and there!! . I also got ignition keys for the 55 from him with only the barrel number.

++UPDATE++

The "new" key arrived at my workplace this morning and it fits perfectly into the door handle which i have kept here with me all this time and i am assuming it will work just as well, when i get home, in the ignition.

It has come from America and cost me a total of $37-. If you ask me I think i have really got away with this quite cheap.

Must say thank you to to everyone on here for the help & advice and especially Mr 912uk for telling me to look on 912BBS cos thats where i found the person that has supplied me the new key. Without that, i would probably be sitting here trying to file out a new blank which are still available from Porsche.

For anyone else with any "key" issues, Tony Euganeo(Das Key Man) is your man. I read somewhere that he perfers to be phoned than email and is a really straight forward guy. As soon as i told him i have the door handle in my hand he told me where the key number is and as soon as i read out the number he said "you have no steering lock which will make life easier and i have your key here in my hand and am putting it in an envelope as we speak. Whats your address? Paypal the money whenever you like"

He told me to wait until this key arrives and make sure that it fits and then he can send me more for a nominal cost and he said he has them with the Porsche stampings on them as original etc.

SO.... its been educational! and i hope this thread serves as a reference point / future help for anyone that gets any issues about keys. And anyone that like me only has/had one key for your car, get intouch with Das key man and get some spares cut now! You cant afford not to.

It worked perfectly and the door card is back on and the ignition barrel back in position.

If anything it feels much more precise and tighter than the original. All that's left is order a couple of spares from Tony.
