oil cooler pipes

hi all

Apologies of someone else has asked something like this before but | am still unsure what to do with the oil cooler side of things on my 2.7 Carrera

The pipes are flattened (as is often the case) close to the jack point and the smaller sections of pipe close to the oil cooler look a little rusty, probably OK but you never know, so some work is needed……..

so ……………………

first question is whether anyone has ever solder repaired their pipes by inserting a new section of brass pipe

second question is whether rather than buying the official Porsche type pipes at the engine side of the thermostat (linking to the oil tank) anyone has bought flexible stainless braided hoses

third question is whether to replace all the pipes with braided

fourth question is my old favourite to run the braided pipes inside the cills and front trunk. I know there will be issues with cooling and I don’t want to put the RS type of spoiler on the front of the car, (the car is being modified to an RS touring appearance with an S type spoiler) which means I am possibly asking the imposible ??

I’m sure I asked these questions before but I can’t find the old thread

Thanks

Jonathan

If you can find the correct size of pipe get a radiator repair shop to braze in a section, they will pressure test it to ensure that its good. Don't put braided hoses on or run the lines through the sills with the standard cooler, it won't keep it cool unless you go to a front cooler.. Apparently the outside pipes provide 80% of the cooling.

thanks Nick
I'd kinda figured as much, so I guess I'm stuck with the old plumbing design after all

Hi Jonathan, I think it depends on how badly crushed they are, there's no doubt that crushed lines will restrict flow in the scavenge circuit back to the tank, however saying that I have dented lines on my car around that jacking point area and at motorway speeds and even 6000rpm+ I have kept an eye on my tank level and never see it go dangerously low, the theory is I guess that once the thermostat opens up the oil is thin enough to flow through those smaller areas. On the rusty bits I'd rubb them back by hand to see how bad they, i wouldnt expect them to have rusted through, hopefully it's just surface stuff. Hope this helps.
