Confused....

OK, I'm confused.....

I've come across a part known as the hot air blower, trouble is my car didn't have one.....it appears as though it should reside in the engine bay.

Can anyone shed any light on this part? Was it standard fit to all 914s? (mine's a '74)

I guess its the blower that links into you heating system, blows fresh(ish) air through the flexi ducts into your heat exchangers and then into the cabin. The heater lever next to the handbrake has a micro switch on it that starts it running.

It doesn't make hot air just blows air, suppliments what the exchanger/tinware makes.

There's a fresh air blower up front between the dash and the fuel tank.....I assumed this did all the air moving that was required for cooling or heating the cabin...

If anyone's got any pics of the hot air blower in situ that would be useful.

From what I understand you have the one up front, just fresh/cold air that is directed onto the screen if required (operate by a slide lever on the dash). You then have another in the engine compartment that suppliments/pushes air into the heat exchangers which then ends up as hot air in the cabin. This blower should start spinning when you open the lever that opens the heat exchanger valves/ducts.

This might start to explain why the heating never seemed to work on the car......

If your is from hotter climates owners often dump them, particularly if the heat exchangers have been replaced by J pipes. Do you have heat exchangers?

The heating won't work without either of these parts

The standard type 4 cooling setup doesn't really pump air out into the heating system like a standard type 1 beetle setup.

You can just see the fan peeping into view on the top left. I haven't fitted the flexi hose yet, behind the carb. The two hoses then run down the outside of each carb through the rear tray and into the heat exchangers

Yes my car does have heat ex's.....it was a bit ropey when i got it though so there's every chance the heater blower just got misplaced.

All I need now is a pic of where its supposed to sit in a 914 engine bay....

dunno location in a 914, but try and trace the wiring, I'm sure that will help, I think its only a 2 or 3 pin block jobby, hopefully its still there just dangling about

Oh and what's interesting about this harness is that it's a euro spec one (no seatbelt sensors etc).....the body shell is definately US spec though....

Hi Tom,

The blower motor mounts on a special bracket off the front of the engine close to the fire wall, a lot of early cars did'nt have this fitted as standard. The blower is operated off the heater lever in the centre tunnel. This switch, which is part of the lever, to be honest it's not a switch at all it's just an insulated section making ground contact, this operates a relay on the main relay board on the left hand side of the engine compartment. If you have a trawl around the Pelican Parts web site there will be an exploded drawing from the factory manual which shows all the bits. Have fun.

Ah!

If it's mounted off the engine then that'll explain why it wasn't there on the car orignally (the original engine had be replaced).

Found this one one ebay:

Doesn't quite look the same as the one in the diagram:

Whats happened to the other pipe??

Any thoughts?

Hi Tom,

Mine, from memory, is the same as the top one with only one pipe, and it has a 'Y' piece coming off for each of the hoses to the heat exchangers, If I get a mo I'll get a picture for you, and where it mounts.

mines like the bottom, each outlet goes to whichever side H/Ex, but then mine isn't a 914

I guess both do the exact same job
