Can anyone post some 2.4L Engine Pics pls

Post by tanick »

I've been trawling this site and others trying to find pics of what my engine should look like. Can anyone post any pics of a good, stock 2.4 engine with MFI? I need to identify whether a few bits are original or not and see the correct routing for cables etc.

Thanks
Nick

This is a 2.7 but everything should look the same apart from the hydraulic tensioner kit

Thanks to both of you. I wanted to see what was visible once the air filter housing went back on. Are there other alternatives to the big black housing? I see all these carburated cars with a nice pair of K&N's on the top. Can you do this with MFI?

Also, I typed the part number into Pelican and bought 2 of the hoses that go from the shroud either side of the fan to the heat exchangers. They arrived and were about 18" long, nowhere near enough. Can you buy this tube by the meter?

Hi Nick,

The K&Ns you are referring to are for carbs, the MFI set up does not have the studs which are needed to mount them. That being said I have seen MFI set ups with K&N style "hats".

Nick

From memory I think that KS has an ITG set up (similar to K & N's) on his MFI equipped car. I also seem to remember there was an article "how to" in 911 & PW some time back. Looked a good set up - pleasing to the eye, anyway!

Talking of which - are there any K and N or ITG style filters available for Zeniths?

I've got a K&N cylinder filter in mine . . . i.e. standard air box. Did fancy having a go at the ITG filters . . . but for the hassle and cost decided against it.

Bringing this thread back to life.

Phil. Is yours an MFI car? Can you post a pic of the K&N. I'm keen to get going on this ITG Project. Does anyone have KS's article that they can scan?

Morning all.

Just to stir the filtering pot...

The k+N filter is substantially less effective at removing particles that the stock paper one..it may however have a slightly lower resistance at high flow rates.

The stock air box does form part of the resonance system which affects cylinder filling too...

There are to my knowledge no data to suggest K+N give better performamnce than stock on the 911 motor.

(I'd like to see any...)

This is likely because of the huge area of the stock filter relative to the air demand.

It is also quicker to remove the stock filter for good access..

Kind regards
David

This is an interesting comparison carried out by a guy on the Early 911S Registry ~18 months ago - he spent a day on the dyno comparing:

1) Std air cleaner + standard exhaust

2) K&N filters + standard exhaust

3) Std air cleaner + sports exhaust (Dansk 2-in 2-out)

4) K&N filters + sports exhaust

Engine was a std 1970 2.2S.

Interesting reading...

Here's a quote from Keith S on the fitment of ITG's to his 2.7mfi engine posted on Pelican:
:
OK, as ITG is a British company, I was able to 'talk' to them easily by e-mail and fax, explaining the installation problems and was able to e-mail them the pic that was published on the forum which shows an MFI engine with ITG filters.

Their tech guy visited me on our magazine booth at a classic car show at the weekend and delivered what they think is the solution. The problem, as you suggest, is height. The filters they came up with are just 40mm high (internal), 65mm (external). The part number is JC40/40 and you need two of them. To go with these is a pair of blank base plates, part number 9JC40 (two off).

The reason for supplying blank base plates is that their is no 'off the shelf' base plate to fit the Porsche MFI set-up. You need to remove the airbox (and the clips which hold it in place), offer up the base plates and filters until you find the ideal position for them (clearance etc) and then, with a hole saw, cut out the openings for the venturis. To secure the baseplates to the stacks you'll need to drill the original plastic baseplate (which is part of the injector stacks) and bolt the new baseplate to it with, say, four M6 nyloc nuts and bolts.

You will need to remove the long oil breather pipe which connects the oil filler with the original air-box and either run it into a breather catch can or through a K&N-style oil breather filter.

I hope this all makes sense! I'll be covering it in the magazine when done. I've offered the new filters up to the car and it doesn't look like there will be any major problems.

Good luck!
KS
