oil temp gauge

I get no reading from the oil temp gauge but if I disconnect the wire the needle goes to the centre of the gauge, faulty gauge or wiring?

It's quite easy to check by simply by passing the wiring all together. The sender is just a resister that as it gets hotter will pass more current to the gauge. To test it remove it from the engine. You will find three wires on the back of the gauge LIVE,EARTH and SENDER. Run a wire from the sender poll on the back of the gauge to the sender so you have cut out any wires in the car. Now earth the side of the sender. When you turn the ignition on you shouldn't have any reading but the needle may flicker. Drop the sender in a cup of boiling water which you know is 100oc and the gauge should move to about the middle. This also tells you where boiling point is on your gauge. If you still have problems then you can now start to change parts to find out where the problems are.

Thanks for that most helpfull and as I allways haye a cup of coffe to hand the boiling water should pose no problem.
