My Floor pan - Horrible - Don't look

OK, At what point do I give up ?
The floor pan is dead, fair enough, the inner part of the sill can be made to at least reach the new floor, I am dreading what I find around the jacking point
I knew it wasn't pretty, but starting to worry now

Did Porsche use expanding polyeurethane foam filler ? I'm guessing not ! It seems to be in all kinds of places

Perhaps I should start to look for a replacement tub

I have no idea how much a 'rust free' shell goes for, but from past experience if the rust is really serious ( whats the front end like? ) I'd think about reshelling the car ( assuming you can find a cheap rust free shell )

Uh Oh, bad luck, Tim. Have you explored further, or not dared yet?

Can you, do you have the gear to, and would you want to do the welding yourself? I guess this is a pretty major condideration, as, as soon as you involve outside parties for this type of work, the costs will quickly head skywards, unless you got very lucky.

Tricky one, it sounds like one way or another the car has reached a definitive stage in it's life: resto or shell swap. I suppose you would have the option of targa, coupe, RHD/LHD, esp as you could always retro a later (galvanised) shell. Also, is that all patching on the bottom right of your picture?

BTW, what brought this on, mobid curiosity, MOT or other?

Hi Tim,

I've just done a couple of very minor repairs to the pan on my 70T. Although the car did not need them, I looked at the cost of new ones. I do not remember them as overly expensive. Perhaps 200 or less for each half. If you have a mig and do them yourself it would be quite economical. Trouble is what is the rest of it like? Shells that need limited work can be picked up for a couple of grand (coupes). If you swapped all your bits into a later coupe that cost you that much you would get your money back in the end as coupes are worth that and more over targas anyway. But perhaps you want a Targa for the open roof bit?

That shell has had alot of patch work around the torsion bar tube. If you were to think about restoration it should be checked on a jig as well ! Looks scarey to me.

Hey Tim my body (car) your engine? we'll end up with a car that we can share. Unfortunately my motors coming out again! The top end refit wasn't enough, looks and sounds like the original engine builders attempt at the bottom end wasn't up to much cop either. Hey ho, at least its got an MOT and tax.

We'll both have a sorterd car one day.

Chin up lad it could be worse, sorry that's about as much help I can be. If you want any extra help one day give us a shout.

When I left school in between college I worked as a welder building skips for the summer! I could brush up on welding skills on your car??

Sorry indeed to hear about your nasty news...

But as has been said, maybe if the rest of the car is really decent it would be worth a reshell...

If that is the direction you want to go I have two decent RHD shells here..one is a 72 solid roof, 2.4T, the other is an 86 sunroof .

Neither has any accident damage , both need some work to finish off..

Hope its not as bad as it looks...

I have a welder, floorpan on order and 5h!t loads of enthusiasm. I have removed most of the floor now, need to tidy a few bits, and investigate the area around the torsion bar tube a little more. There are a lot of patches, but I still believe I can make it good again. The MOT man last march warned me it was getting a bit thin, I guess I have a new winter project. Its not that bad, but if I was paying someone else to do the work, I'd give up and sell the bits. Hey cheer up guys, at least its not yours

its a 1978 galvanised shell, for 500 euros. Your trailer, a VW TDI and three tanks of diesel, the ferry crossing and the shell might cost you the whole of £700!)

I remember having that sinking feeling when we started teh resto of my VW cabrio

and yes my cabrio was a fully MOT'd driver a couple of weeks earlier

Just logged on to find this horror!!

My theory is if a man with steel and a welder made it first time then you can make it again! Mine was pretty bad in this area, you can recover it.

Remember the extras if you try to reshell into a coupe, 1/4 windows, interior trim, rubbers, grilles bumpers etc etc. Will be a touch more then E500 by the time you've finished.
