Just seen this on another forum .. Scottish Govt being arses again and thinking of reducing speed limits on b & a roads

Yes, I'm in the West Midlands.
I go to Scotland every autumn and it is great. I don't hoon around there just enjoy the place.
I see these things as the tip of the iceberg, look at Wales, 20 mph directive, Other areas will follow suit if Scotland changes it's limits.

Nothing in the survey asks if you live in Scotland?

My point is a simple one. More people live in England than in Scotland - by a factor of about ten. If you all answer the survey Scotland will end up with English laws. Sound familiar?

For some background to how this consultation has come about, it's all down to the dualling of the A9. At the start of the project it was decided to add speed cameras for the whole of the single carriageway sections of the road. In order to reduce frustration for drivers it was also decided to increase the HGV speed limit from 40mph to 50 mph.

For someone that have driven the A9 over the last few years this scheme actually works. The average speed on single carriageways is 50 mph and there are plenty of overtaking opportunities in the dual sections. I doubt if the journey time from Perth or Inverness (100 miles) is any different and certainly it's less stressful.

What I'm not sure about is would it work in normal A roads? I certainly think it would make sense on the A1, A68, and the A77. It would particularly make sense on the A77 which already has wide spread use of speed cameras, and therefore cars are stuck behind lorries doing 40mph.

We were in the A9 area a few years ago and indeed the system worked even though cameras were present. Not too bad for the tourist.

I have also done the survey. In general I'm absolutely against any speed limits, Darwin was right IMHO. Plus, as everybody knows, spending time on the road is dangerous, so drive as fast as possible therefore spending as little time as possible on it.... Hand-grenade!

I'm sure there will be some people who would go mad everywhere with no limits, but most want to avoid damage so drive sensibly.
The current limits seem good to me in the UK, but i like the French system on motorways where if it is dry the limit is higher than wet on their motorways, and this seems to be sufficient in general.

I'd say this 'system' is used already in the UK.

However, A road speeds are important for traffic flow, roads I use a lot, and a HGV at 56 mph ish is ok until a hill rears it's head..

My general response in the survey was don't change anything.
