Shipping to Norway

I'm planning a road trip next year to Norway in the 912E and doing my research and planning at the moment. I only have 10 days in total for the trip, and my only realistic route option is Hull to Rotterdam and then drive up to Denmark or Germany to get the ferry to Norway. Its 1100km to Hirtshals, so basically its 2 days driving to get to Norway, and 2 days back due to ferry times, so 4 days of driving just to be in Norway. As such I started looking at options to transport my car over there. An obvious one is a car transport company, but they want circa £1500 to drive it (each way) and a lot lot more to put it on a low loader. TBH I don't really want someone driving my car.

So I have started looking into shipping it over. Global shipping have given me a price of under £2000 for return shipping including fees and insurance. This is cheaper than it would cost for ferries, fuel and hotels so I am seriously considering it. Its 3 days RORO from Immingham to Brevik, so both locations work. So I could fly in and then collect the car from the docks, do the road trip, before dropping off and flying back.

Has anyone else done something similar and able to offer advice or lessons learned? Or other options I may not have considered? I know that the drive could be part of the trip. But the roads are generally less interesting and I would rather spend more time in Norway if possible.

I think the only concern with that is it has been talked about a number of times and things either don't happen or there is significant delay. There must be a reason the newcatle ferry stopped in the first place. I also should have mentioned that next year is my 50th, so this is a bucket list thing I want to do.

I was already composing this answer before I'd finished reading your post. Then realised you'd gotten there already. I've known folk dump their campervan at Aberdeen docks on the Saturday, then pick it up in Bergen on the Tuesday. Used to be about a grand return, plus your flights, but saves about 2000km and three days of driving. And honestly, Rotterdam to Hirtshals is fụcking boring.

the conclusion I came to. I've just never done this before, ie the shipping of a car so thought i'd check if anyone else has, or come up with a better solution. I did quite fancy the Oslo to Kiel ferry which was going to be my route back. But overall dull roads which is fine if you're driving a modern car that will eat the miles up. Don't fancy it in the 912.

I've done Kiel-Göteborg a few times now, in both directions. It's a great ferry, and because it's on an inland sea it's a properly gentle journey. Oslo is just a tiny bit further. Always done it overnight as well. Again, cost of hotel, fuel, and it works out nicely. Hamburg's not far from Kiel and on your way back, so a trip to Prototyp would be good!

We have pals in Bergen who we visit most years and they come back here regularly too. As far as they’re concerned it’s definitely happening and the area is apparently excited about it.

I think the world’s changed a bit since all the North Sea routes stopped ~15 years ago.

Norwegian roads are utterly fab.
