72 911T engine and gearbox refit
After 12 months of not being able to work on the car due to a slipped disc I have managed a loose refit of the engine and gearbox. One immediate issue that confuses me is that there is now a 2 inch gap between the gearbox shaft and the gear lever linkage. I hope the photo is attached if not will try again. The engine and box are not matching - gearbox is a 69 dogleg which I have had rebuilt by Mike Bainbridge. It wasn't the original box from the car as that was beyond economical repair but is the same type and era box. So why the gap now? Have the gremlins shrunk the gear lever shaft???Any ideas appreciated - I can only think that the gearbox shaft is different in the new box. What do I know however!

I’d say that hopefully your box is just in gear. Try grabbing hold of the end and pulling it forward in car.
Conversely push the stick forward and the coupling should come back to meet the selector shaft.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
Dead right, prob both, pull (hard) the shaft into the tunnel, and push the lever to 1st/ 3rd position.
The shaft and the clamp should easily be together.
Make sure you get in gear and not just neutral.
Mikeis a gearbox expert, box will be perfect but might be tight.
He does his rebuilds dry of oil, make sure you remember to fill it!

If your car is a 1972 911T, then the 1969 901 box is not "the same type and era box" as the original 915 gearbox.Rupsol wrote: The engine and box are not matching - gearbox is a 69 dogleg which I have had rebuilt by Mike Bainbridge. You will need to check with Mike Bainbridge to see what mods are needed to complete the installation.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
Am I missing something here or is it just the bushed coupling is missing. That would fill the gap.

Yes, looks like this is missing: https://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewt ... 87#p639687grannysmith wrote:Am I missing something here or is it just the bushed coupling is missing. That would fill the gap.
Be sure to replace the bushes for a slightly less stirring porridgey gearchange.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
Weirdly I came to this thread to search to see if anyone had tackled exactly this and here it was, right at the top.
I have a 901 dogleg 5-speed gearbox (not yet fitted) in a 915 bodied 911T and was expecting the same problem on reassembly. As I understand it the 915 and 901 shift rod lengths are slightly different lengths, so I was considering whether to get hold of a slightly longer 901 shift rod or whether I could make do/modify.
Please let me know if / how you sort this...
Also will need to rotate the 915 shift mount 180 degrees and modify the stick in order to switch the reverse gate to the 901 pattern. I assume this has already been done?
FYI I'm restoring a 911T Targa that came without an engine, etc. gearbox, interior, bonnet, front wing, headlamps and much more... currently on a rotisserie and nearly ready for reassembly.
Cheers

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I need to speak to Mike and will try and sort it out. Next issue is equally perplexing.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
The sketch is very rough. When the engine is in the car and the rear mounts are bolted down there is a gap at A of about an inch. I took it out again and noticed the mounting bracket is higher on the right than the left therefore creating the gap a A. Any ideas? Is the mounting bracket knackered? I don’t see how as it came out of the car like that.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
I Gap A when there is nothing supporting the box/engine weight, ie the gearbox input shifter shaft is resting on the bottom of the tunnel hole?
You should be able to jack the box up (assuming the engine rear bam is bolted into place) and the gearbox shaft should be about in the middle of the hole it passes into at the end of the trans tunnel.
The mountings (rubber) should then be hard up against the torsion bar cross tube mountings and the 2 bolts in place, but the gearbox mounting cross beam should be hard up against the mounting pads on the torsion bar tube.
Have you got the box cross beam mounting on the right side??
If you can close Gap A then something is blocking things, check the top of the engine, carb top box, trapped hoses etc.
Do not force anything!
It should come into position so A does not exist and the box/engine bolts are in and tight.
Only then can you address the box/shift rod linkage.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
Gap A exists when the rear mounts are bolted in tight and the gearbox mount is bolted in tight - that is why I am perplexed!!! - when looking from the back of the car the engine mounting bar is not level - its higher on the right hand side. the engine mounts car crossmember are the same on both sides. It doesnt look like its bent or been messed around with. The tin ware cant sit anywhere but where it is but there is still a gap.

Re: 72 911T engine and gearbox refit
Then the whole engine and box is on a considerable slant when viewed from behind?
That to me means the rubber mounting blocks are not correct, the two on one side are in the wrong way round. Best look ar all 4 and also find a diagram on google. For correct position.
