Tacho restoration & conversion to 1972-spec 10k rpm

I’m pretty sure that an original early ‘72 10k rpm tacho for my S/T build is unobtanium / ludicrously expensive (£1 per rpm??), so wondered if anyone could recommend a decent dial/instrument restorer, ideally of this parish, who will be able to take the tacho from my donor car and restore and convert it to a reliable and period-correct 10k one?

You probably know already North Hollywood are the top people in the USA for Porsche dials: https://www.nhspeedometer.com/ and I think some on here have used REAP http://www.reapautomotivedesign.com/ who do Porsche dials in the UK, but I can't say whether they do precisely what you need.

I have no doubt they'll put a new scale on the face for you. The adjustment to the circuitry to reduce its sensitivity might be best in the form of a potentiometer on the back so you can calibrate it.

Thanks Rob, that’s really helpful. I had found North Hollywood already but I’m trying to use UK suppliers and specialists first off, principally due to the punative post-Brexit customs and skyrocketing shipping charges from the USA & EU.

I will send REAP an email and see what they quote to convert mine for me.

He´s located in Poland, used to work for North Hollywood for some 20 years if I remember correctly.

He recently built a 10k tacho for me and both pricing and quality was excellent.

Our CDI+ box has inbuilt tacho calibration meaning you can adjust make any tacho scale to read whatever you want.

That means you can use a cheaper tacho (eg from an SC) and just change the face to the 10k - you don't need to have it recalibrated.

Your car will run a whole lot better too!

I used Reap to restore the faces on my tacho ( to 10,000rpm) and speedo. Additionally to ensure both function properly. The quality of the graphics is excellent. However, it took eight months for the work to be completed and neither instrument has worked fautlessly since. Getting in contact with Reap was also problematic: messages and emails went un answered.

I wonder if North Hollywood is ultimately the better option then as their reputation is apparently top-notch (various threads on ESR seem to suggest this).

Just swap the face of any tacho with this and use our box to recalibrate. Simples.

I have had 50+ tachos & speedos converted over the years by North Hollywood Speedo & the service/results were unbeatable.

I've tried many of the UK-based companies (supposedly) offering similar services & would never use any of them again.

I haven't tried Hans Peters in the Netherlands or Woldek in Poland though but have heard only positive comments about both.

Reap is great but are more for cosmetic work. For mechanical issues, he sends them to Hans Peters.

I have used both and had good experiences but they do take a while to get back.

I have heard good things about Woldek but have not used him.

Wait time isn’t such an issue for me as this is the beginning of a long ‘journey’ (to use a worn-out cliché) to build a car which I will be really pleased with and up there with stretch’s and kirk’s.

Quality of finish and accuracy and reliability in use coupled with good customer service are key for me. If someone says they have 4 jobs on at the moment and it will be 8 months before they can get to mine, that’s fine - if they do deliver when they say they’re going to, or they manage expectations by keeping me informed re progress.
