Indicator stalks - sensitive to positioning?

Continuing to get my 1970 911T ready for its first MOT; the indicator stalks only turn the indicators on when in exactly the right position. It's easy to push them past the spot where the indicators are on. Is this a standard feature and/or should I make some change to make them turn on reliably in all positions or stop moving in the "on" position?
