Door lock mechanism operation help

Hi guys i have the same as whats in the photo, as you can see the lock on the left has a extra metal slider than the other one on the right

The question is , what does that slider do and should i have one on the right side .

I think this is part of your lock mechanism. If it's missing your door will not lock. Check it out on the one that has it.
Aaaah that makes sense Dirk. My RHD had sliders on both.

The left is a LHD driver door lock. The slider prevent a potential lock out. It is not possible to lock with the inner push rod and close an open driver door without the key.

RHD should have the slider on the right door lock btw.

Thanks for the reply dirk it makes complete sense now !! How we I spoke to a friend today
Who has a RHD car and went and checked and it seems the slam lock is on the passenger side(rhd )
Can anyone confirm there RHD car has the slam lock in the drivers side . I’m pretty sure the factory would have made these handed but it’s always good to confirm it

For what it's worth (which arguably is not much, since I don't know whether the lock mechanisms are original to the car), my RHD '69 has the "anti locking yourself out" mechanism on the driver's door only.

Changing tack a little. One thing I have to sort on my LHD car is that the lock locks with the key but just opens again with the door pull. Can't quite work out what that might mean. I need to bite the bullet and get it apart I guess!

I worked (deign and development) in the car and domestic door lock industries for about 16 years, and through those years the method of operation and rules changed a lot.

Some countries needed you (at the time) to be able to exit the car/house without more than one unlocking action because it could be a life or death scenario.

So, drivers side, locked from the outside (possible, you can self lock pushing the door button down) and later, the driver needs to exit pdq.
Simple, just pull the inside handle and the door is unlocked and unlatched in one operation that is intuitive.

Also, conversely, a robber can approach the car, driver pushes the button down to secure themselves, robber smashes the glass, reaches into the inside handle or button and opens the door and kills them, say....

Lot of locks are arranged to meet regulations and even common sense, but that can bring perils.

Sometimes the driver and passenger doors have to behave in different ways due to prevailing standards that can be different country by country and possibly different to todays thinking.

Door locks on Police cars are different too.

Just for info, my 911 is a LHD car I converted to RHD a very long time ago and I kept the door locks as LHD and use of the car is fine.
