Re: WTB 1968 SWB drive shafts
What type nadella or lobro?
Had this issue earlier this year. If lobro cv joints count the splines, if original they should have 25 or 27, (cannot remember the exact count), anyway you cannot buy new joints off the shelf. Solution is to buy VW irs drive shafts that have a 33 spline count. You should be able to pick a set up from a VW specialist (Heritage or Machine7) for not a huge amount of money. Remember you should replace the schnor washers as a minimum on the drive shaft bolts.
There is a whole world of discussion about them on the early 911 website and pelican

Re: WTB 1968 SWB drive shafts
Hi Ian, great to hear from you !
My car takes the later Lobro shafts, did have the VW shafts installed, they were new but only got about 2000 miles out of them, maybe I was unlucky, am thinking to change both sides now. I recall one ddk member voicing concerns about the range of angle for the CV joints Being a potential issue, but not for road use... so maybe that was a factor. Will check out what the latest chat on the forums is as you suggest
Thanks for the PM , your kind guidance is always appreciated.

Did the driveshafts fail (snapped, splines strip), or the CV joint? There are plenty of low quality CV joints available for VWs (good enough for 30-50hp perhaps ). You have to be picky to get decent versions.1968911s wrote:Hi Ian, great to hear from you !

Yep had the same issue the other month. Bought lobro manufactured cv joints And installed on VW drive shafts. Used seat arosa joints as recommended on the early 911 forum.Bruce M wrote:Did the driveshafts fail (snapped, splines strip), or the CV joint? What year/model of Arosa? Got a part number handy?SeanP wrote: Yep had the same issue the other month. Bought lobro manufactured cv joints And installed on VW drive shafts. Used seat arosa joints as recommended on the early 911 forum.
Edit: found it. Not sure why the Arosa part is preferable. Easier to get or better grease seal? Can’t see the outer diameter of the joint but assume that fits? Rest of the specs match.
Lobro 302229. Vw part is 302232
Or Lobro’s cheaper brand :
Spidan 22455. VW part is 22405

Thats the one. Its all to do with the plunge! apparently. They fit as they have the same bolt pattern.Bruce M wrote:What year/model of Arosa? If you need bolts and washers PM me as I bought 200 of them as it was cheaper than buying them in singles or packs of 10

Re: WTB 1968 SWB drive shafts
Yes to be clear, it was a CV joint failure (at the Diff end), I had not appreciated the need to change the CV joint on the drive shafts which is now quite obvious- DOH!, so done properly I need to change all 4 CV joints? to Lobro 302229. Vw part is 302232? Is this strongest/ best... am not eager to repeat the roadside recovery again in the future, and do enjoy a spirited drive.
thanks Rich

Re: WTB 1968 SWB drive shafts
Had a quick search of early911s but couldn’t find the definitive thread. Chris said in a post the VW driveshafts are a few mm different in length and he used a vw/Audi CV as it have greater axial tolerance. The Arosa part was also used on various VW golf / polo / caddy / etc.
Strength wise, they were spec part for the 6N Polo GTI which had about 109ftlbs of torque.

Not sure if the difference between spidan & lobro. Same company. I thought spidan was a cheaper brand for older vehicles but that’s maybe not the case. Certainly checking the full driveshaft set (what you already have), the Spidan price is double the Lobro price, for what appears to be the same part!?.
Spidan 21803 vs Lobro 300638
I’d be curious to know how many teeth the driveshaft has on that set. If it’s 33teeth, that basically the VW set, I think. A remanufactured part too? I crossed checked the VW beetle part and they only sell the CV joints and not the full driveshaft set. However the 901 set has the same spec length of ~406mm as the VW beetle spec (405.3mm flange to flange).

Re: WTB 1968 SWB drive shafts
When I did my cv joints my drive shafts were clearly stamped VW on the end 33 splines. I read all of the threads on the early 911 forum and pelican. They all said stay away from empi parts and go with decent parts. Chris was a font of knowledge on all these early Porsche conundrums. Used his suggestions sorting out my cv joints
