The optimum steering wheel: 73T hot rod.

Quite fancy a stock wheel back on my T but not the T spec one which I have.

My stock wheel is covered in a real leather 1980's lace-on sleeve, very retro, but....
I currently have an unusual Momo from the early 90's.



Now, I don't know what is a good alternative, but I think it is:

380mm dia, hocky puck horn, thick grip re-cover from Garry and others.

Please can one of the wheel experts give me the details of the base wheel (914?), the puck source (not KK...) that will all fit and work on my 73T?

Unfortunately you've 'missed the boat' by a number of years as any 'thick grip' 380mm wheel & a hockey puck horn button is an expensive option these days (unless you're very lucky) ...

The wheels that will physically fit without modification to the wheel itself are:

914.347.803.10 & 914.347.804.10 - hard plastic/ebonite rim

914.347.805.10 & 914.347.806.10 - leather rim wheels

The 'cheapest' will be the 804.10 followed by 803.10, 805.10 & the most expensive will be the 806.10.

The process of converting to a 'thick grip' including new leather covering is time consuming & hence an expensive undertaking.

Adding a hockey puck - whether it's a repro or original - is not cheap either ...

I went on the KK web site, about £1000 for a 380/puck.

Can't justify that for 500 miles a year.

I had a slippy 420mm wood VDM in the 911, a glorious anachronism which wouldn't have looked out of place in a motorboat.

I replaced it with a 380mm thick grip (supplied by Andy) and the car was transformed into a sports car.

Transformed I tell you !

The pucks are incredibly expensive for what they are {IMO) Although KK do do a repro for £300

I bought a 914 wheel of American eBay - it was in poor condition and pretty cheap. Then got one of the KK £300 pucks, and had it double wrapped by jtparr of this parish.
It’s a lovely wheel

What is the puck made from?
Could it be 3D printed?

Black plastic puck, chrome (plastic?) trim ring and then leather covered centre with logo on it. All set into 3 pronged metal bit that slots onto the wheel.

The embossed leather and chrome trim ring are available from Design 911... and I've seen them somewhere else somewhere.

FAR more encouraging, obviously I haven't done enough homework!
Didn't mean to be lazy, but I usually don't fuss with this stuff, the Momo on the car has been on there for 30 years and really feels/looks it, but I intend to do more on the 911 this year, and a wheel came to mind having painfully knelt on my original yesterday in the loft...

It’s a much bigger diameter, feel-wise than the momo. Gives more of an old car feel but once you adjust to that it gives you more feel in the corners - it’s more sensitive to the forces on the front wheels

And that is mostly my reason for looking to optimise the wheel (diameter, more than looks).
My first drive in my 911 in 1990 after Bob Watson had tinkered with the geo was truly memorable for steering feel and it was so alive. The smaller Momo seems to have weighted that out.
I am leaning to a re furb'd stock T wheel and puck 'conversion' if I can.

Will pop the stock wheel on and see if that gets the feel back to the drive, that wonderful writhing as you scoot along.

Put a 380mm on .... do t go back to stock. The 914 wheels do come up at sensible m9ney, then just modify for the 911 indicator cancelling ring position. Double leather wrap is something you could try yourself ... if it goes tits up send it to JTparr

Graham, I don't want to hijack your thread but I have a 380mm wheel
which needs some serious attention. The top third of the outer plastic,
or whatever it is has broken up leaving the steel inner rim. Do any of
you guys know how this could be repaired?

Exactly what I did, except for trying to wrap it myself. I sent it straight to JTparr.
