914 starter hanging on

I turn the 914 1.8l starter over and after releasing the key, the starter is still energised?

Tried two ignition switches and starter is new.

What else should I check?

Solenoid stuck on the starter or shorted out inside?

It’s a new starter but I will check that may put old one back on and see if it’s the same.

Mine did that many years ago and it was the ignition starter switch at fault. It's fiddly to get to as you need to pull off the steering wheel, indicator stalk etc to get behind the ignition barrel.
