PS autoart value

A friend of a friend is enamoured of this Autoart Classic Touring

It looks nice so I understand that he likes it. But I just can't get my head around the price £190k. So on one hand it's niceish and hopefully really nicely restored and sorted. But on the other hand it's just a backdated G50 3.2

Would anyone consider buying such a car and what would you think it should be worth?

£85k maybe? But £190k? Nope.

You can get a nice 2.4S for the same.
I know which I’d have.

I’ve driven the PS car and it’s very different to an early car. Quieter, comfier, brisker, has air con. The guy who had it built had lots of cars and changed his Eagle E Type for it as he wanted something his wife would be happy to travel in. It fulfils that brief very nicely indeed.

It wouldn’t be for me, but neither would a Singer for 3 times more and both PS and Singer manage to find homes for their cars new and used.

I’d get the John Lewis one then personalise the look by jazzing it up with some thrift-shop accessories.

Maybe Norse Projects? You appreciate nice things, but you’re not a show off so would never get anything Moncler. And definitely not a chav so the Ralph Lauren one is out.

I was thinking the other day that there’s a gap in the car market at the mo. If you’re rich but not flash what do you get brand new? Something beautifully put together but subtle. I suppose Mercedes tried to find it with the Maybach.

If you want to spend a ‘huge’ amount of money, then you probably can’t do ‘not flash’ anymore?

If you’re happy spending more modestly, then over the years, ALPINA ticks a lot of those boxes, for some?

I really did like the PS “Le Mans Classic” edition when I saw it in the flesh, at the Silverstone Classic festival, last year. The prices are just what some people can / are happy to pay... but I did really, really have massive ‘want’ at the time!

Fair point. If you spend £200k on a car you’re going to have a hard job convincing anyone it’s not ostentatious.

A debadged non-AMG big-engine Mercedes or an S8 used to work OK in the Alpina price range but they seem to suddenly all look a bit Uber.

I think it’s very hard to consider the PS car “good value” at that price Graham, more of a “I know I am paying way over” but I can afford it. I wouldn’t buy it at half the price. Much better options and dare I say it, much better workmanship.

Yes, very hard to say. It's just such a huge amount of money. I've passed on my view that it's so hard to determine what it's worth. But the friend of a friend is a big boy and if he wants it, it's worth whatever gets agreed if a deal gets done!

Get him to try for some hospitality in the deal - at Le Mans Classic, Goodwood, Spa etc. Paul goes to all those things and coffee in the drivers’ enclosure is much better fun than £5k off the price.
