Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarters ?
Hi,
Is there a difference betweeen '73RS & std '73-'77 rear quarters ?
Just smashed up a rear quarter in my RS on Saturday after a ridiculous track incident at Bruntingthorpe and keen to get my car repaired asap, but not 100% sure what you buy.
Std '73-'77 wing I think is part No 91150306104GRV. Not sure if there is a different RS one, and if so then what is differnet about it.
Is it just the same wing in lighter gauge metal ?
Cheers
Andrew

Re: Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarter
The original rear wings on the '73RS and early 1974 Carrera 2.7 had welded on flares with a different profile to the later wings which were produced with the flares incorporated. The edge section on the RS flare tapered to be thicker at the top whereas the later profile had a constant thickness.
If restored the car may have been fitted with the later wings anyway.

HI Andy best to determine what flare you have on the "good" side. I've been through the identification process as my 74 US Spec Carrera as out of the 535 that were produce the first couple of hundred had RS flares and the rest SC style flares - mine are SC ones. I think most of the quarter panels for sale at the mo are SC style but you could buy these any weld in a proper RS flare if that's what you need? I'm not aware of any quarter panel that is fitted with the RS flare but i'm more a SWB man...... others will know.

Porsche Classic do actually reproduce the RS rear wing in thinner gauge steel with correct welded on arches.
Takes an additional 30 hours to produce, so wont be cheap ££££.
Could be worth it though for an original RS.

Re: Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarter
I’ve got a pair of pre 74 standard rear wings and a set of real RS flares to complete the job as it would have originally been done on a real RS shell back in the day. I was keeping them for any possible incident with my own car similar to yours. I also have NOS rear quarters and trim and also RS sill trims. Also a new aluminium real licence plate panel.
You could tempt all of this away from me for a very generous offer Andrew.
Sod’s law, I will have an incident as soon as I let it all go.
Regards
Mike

The last time I saw a price for the RS rear quarters from thinner gauge steel they were £1600 each.Guy wrote:Porsche Classic do actually reproduce the RS rear wing in thinner gauge steel with correct welded on arches.

Re: Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarter
So I’m thinking nice originals actually made in 1973 in a thicker stronger gauge including matching gauge real RS arches should be a bit more than modern reproductions?BILLY BEAN wrote:The last time I saw a price for the RS rear quarters from thinner gauge steel they were £1600 each.Guy wrote:Porsche Classic do actually reproduce the RS rear wing in thinner gauge steel with correct welded on arches.

So that’s £3200 plus vat plus delivery for the repros, could be close on £4K. The gauge won’t match the rest of the shell and you wouldn’t fit just one to save money would you and have mismatched sides?
How much is a standard rear wing from Porsche?
Regards
Mike

Thanks for all the inputs guys. Your link was particularly helpful in that regard Robin.
They say learning something every day keep you young
I assume this picture of my car confirms that my rear quarters are '78 on SC ones. Is that right.
If yes, then I need an SC left rear quarter.
Any options or recommendations welcome

From recollection £750-800 depending upon which side as for some reason they are priced differently.

Re: Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarter
Andrew they look like SC but a closer, square on shot would be answer. IMO the best way to determine the difference is not the shape of the opening its the flat flare profile. As stated else where on the SC flares the flat edge is the same width around the opening whereas the RS flare is much wider at the top narrowing then as it goes down each side. Just an idea - you could possibly get a rear quarter then weld in two correct RS flares if you wanted the genuine look? Possibly worth doing if going into the paint shop anyways?

Re: Is there a difference betweeen RS & '73-'77 rear quarter
I think that was exactly my point above Mr Red Robin. Now would be a good time to make any corrections from SC arches R&L with original parts but you have to remember it is a competition car so might not be worth it.
